Breakfast at Monster Kitchen and Bar in Hotel Hotel

Monster Expectations for breakfast

This morning Bron and I went to the Monster Kitchen and Bar in Hotel Hotel in New Acton.

It was a vile day weather wise and after parking we were grateful to be inside and seated at a pretty cool table near the bar with a view of the kitchen. We went in with high expectations of a good breakfast experience. We arrived shortly after 8.30 and noticed the dining area was well under half full. It didn’t take long though to fill up from about 9.30. I reckon most people in Canberra tried to sleep in today.

After being seated it didn’t take long to be given a menu and a bottle of water and some glasses. We thought the water bottle was pretty funky.

The menu is pretty good for breakfast but it doesn’t have run of the mill cafe options. You can get poached eggs and most sides you like but don’t expect Eggs Benedict. Something that will keep Tara happy is the cutlery. The knife provided is sturdy and serrated so even the toughest of toast is not a challenge.  You can check out some of Tara’s comments on knives here.

The service started really well. It remained friendly throughout but as the place started to fill up we were left waiting between coffee and meals and between meals and a second round of coffee. In addition there was a mistake with Bron’s dish, she had asked for an egg and on first pass it arrived sans egg. When it did arrive it was sitting on top of what was now a tepid sandwich.

Bron thought her tostada tasted nice and the Serrano ham was delicious, but it needed something to tie it all together and balance the dryness of the bread and cheese. She thought a spicy tomato salsa or similar would help to raise the dish above just being an expensive ham and cheese toastie.

For me I asked for the scrambled eggs and, king mushrooms and Parmesan custard. I was taken by the Parmesan custard because Bron recently made this for breakfast herself. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know how much I love making scrambled eggs. The Monster Kitchen and Bar scrambled eggs were okay and much better than most hotel breakfast buffet scrambled eggs. The mushrooms were certainly king size. They were meaty and full of flavour. The Parmesan custard had a nice taste to it but the serving was very small. Not as nice as Bron’s.

The coffees we had were pretty good. Strong but not too strong. The decor was modern and warm. I’d like to see it on a sunny day to see how much light the sky lighting allows through.

So did Monster Kitchen and Bar meet our monster expectations? Well not quite. The breakfast was okay. The service was friendly but it was a little hit and miss. That’s to be expected when the restaurant fills up but we did feel the time between first coffees and the meals and the time from the meal delivery and second coffees was too long. There was also the issue of Bron’s fried egg.

Now for the rating. I give it three colonies out of five. The breakfast wasn’t bad. For a hotel it was good. If I don’t get an opportunity to eat there again it won’t worry me.
