Fantastic bacon from @pialligoestate and @CanberraEsntl

The breakfast of champions needs fantastic bacon and eggs

A few weeks ago Liz from http://www.bizzylizzysgoodthings.com/ sent a message around to a few Canberra bloggers asking if they’d like to try some bacon from Pialligo Farm. I don’t think it’s a secret that I like love bacon so I said yes. Liz sent me a voucher for 225 g of bacon and I went to pick it up from the Essential Ingredient in Kingston. The voucher has a value of $7. I also bought a second packet of bacon.

I was listening to 1206 2CC and Mark Parton interviewed one of the artisans from Pialligo Farm when they won the best artisan bacon for Australia. I didn’t realise that supermarket bacon is pumped with water to plump it up and Australian supermarket commercial bacon isn’t as good as European cured bacon. I should say that I am happy to eat supermarket bacon. I buy about 250 g of streaky bacon from Coles every week. I’ve also eaten bacon in the USA, Canada and the UK. I love the Canadian bacon with maple syrup. I’ve also had beef bacon in Malaysia. I also had turkey ham there too. I’m not a fan of beef bacon or turkey ham.

So this morning I made bacon and eggs. I mean what better way to enjoy some good bacon. Oh my, this is good bacon. I’ll be enjoying it all.

Hello Tuesday. A pinch and a punch for the first of the month. Pialligo Farm bacon and Coles fried eggs for breakfast.

  1. I love streaky bacon but my favourite is when it is cut really thinly. You used to be able to buy bacon at the butcher and he/she would cut it as thin as you liked but now it appears that all bacon is cut to a standard thickness which I find too thick.

    1. I miss a suburban butcher who I could have a proper relationship with. Memories flood back of walking to the shops with Mum and listen to her explain to the butcher exactly what she wanted. He learnt a lot about meat for Chinese cooking from her and I learnt that cutting meat looked fun.

  2. Dear Gary,
This bacon looks like the one I am used to eat back in Mexico, but in Australia I always buy short cut which doesn’t have as much fat, and I was not familiar with it until I arrived in this country.
I personally like both, although boyfriend prefers the short cut. Could you enlighten me on the differences between either style? thx
BTW, those eggs looks perfect and ready to be devour!

    1. I prefer the fatty (aka streaky) bacon because I like fat. I often cook it and drain the fat but what’s left is then nice and crisp. The bacon from Pialligo Farm is $7 for 225 g which isn’t too bad. But if you like to get streaky bacon, Coles and Woolworths sell it from their deli areas.

    1. Thanks Liz. It was close to the best bacon I’ve tasted in Canberra. The best was some made by a friend’s husband.
