So in this post I’m going to do a weekly wrap up and highlight when Australian asparagus is featured.

Sunday 4 September

Last weekend was pretty wet. I managed to get out for a walk around Lake Ginninderra and shoot some photographs.

The blossoms are looking good.

It was a bright and beautiful morning in Canberra and on the lake.

For dinner, I slowly roasted a shoulder of lamb with the bone in. I had it in the oven in a heavy casserole for four hours at 150 °C. It was so succulent.

Monday 5 September

Work was good. I have been working on a new matter which has engaged some areas of my brain that I haven’t used for a while.

You’ll also recall from last week’s post that one of my hospital colleagues gave me a book as a gift. It is a very special book and it helped me complete my collection of editions of the “Manual of Clinical Microbiology”.

For dinner, I had a simple meal after a big weekend of eating. A simple piece of salmon with some coleslaw.

Tuesday 6 September

My package of asparagus arrived via Australia Post. Vikki had arranged five bunches, one large bunch of luscious spears, two medium bunches, and two mini bunches. These were in a reusable bubble bag.

Vikki had also arranged for a Media Release and a fact sheet on the nutritional value of asparagus.

So on Tuesday night for tea I had a medium sized bunch of asparagus plus some salmon.

Wednesday 7 September

I had a busy day. I had some heavy reading and writing to do. I didn’t even record how I made my dinner.

Normally I have Chicken Maryland on Wednesday and Thursday evenings but when I was shopping the previous weekend there weren’t any single pieces so I bought a packet of Coles brand pork sausages (six sausages) and ate three snags with a medium sized bunch of asparagus.

Thursday 8 September

I received a nice surprise in the mail. It was a book celebrating “60 years of Aiming High”. My primary school, Stafford Heights State School, held a celebration last weekend in Brisbane. I didn’t attend but I bought a book. I had contributed to it with a couple of pages of memories. It’s been good reading some stories from friends and teachers.

For dinner, I made curry pork sausages and asparagus using the large luscious bunch of asparagus.

Friday 9 September

For dinner, I had surf and turf (rump steak and prawns) from the Canberra Southern Cross Club Jamison.

Saturday 10 September

For breakfast, I had a fried egg on a piece of fried bread with some smashed avocado.

For lunch, I had a bunch of mini asparagus with some crispy bacon and a fried egg.

In the afternoon I went for a walk and shot some photographs.

For dinner, I had some leftover lamb from last Sunday’s dinner plus some pearl barley couscous and the final bunch of asparagus (a mini bunch).

You should try it. If you haven’t tried asparagus, it’s worth a go. It’s easy to cook and great to eat. Don’t forget you can get the AAC has a free cookbook at Download FREE e-cookbook.

Blogs and dogs

It’s been a while since I’ve done a link love post here on Yummy Lummy.

I want to share some link love with two bloggers for whom there is a canine connection. Both own dogs and one blogs about her dog every day. The other blogs about a couple of webcomics she writes and she has a dog. I know this may be a tenuous connection but I needed a hook for the title and I communicate with each of them nearly every day through social media.

Jennifer P

The first blogger is Jennifer P. I’ve mentioned Jennifer a few times previously on Yummy Lummy. Jennifer is an independent author of fiction for children and teens as well as the creator of a couple of webcomics. She is very artistic.

Sarah and Choppy

The second blogger is Sarah. Sarah likes to travel with her dog Choppy. Although of late, Sarah and Choppy have limited their travel to daily walks.

The nice thing is that Jennifer and Sarah know each other.

The Canine Connection

So what’s the canine connection with Jennifer I hear you ask? Jennifer has recently started posting to Instagram and she has a great Vimeo channel. A recent video (on her Patreon site) was of her dog, Siggi going on a walk. Siggi has this bright blue illuminated collar which he wears to increase his visibility on footpaths. Jennifer has mentioned that sometimes cyclists ride on footpaths and it sounds like little Siggi can be easily missed. The collar is like a high visibility jacket.

Webcomics

Jennifer has a couple of webcomics and derives some money from a patreon account and the sale of webcomic-related merchandise. One of the comics, viz., Little Monster Girl is not safe for work NSFW. There’s nothing particularly offensive about LMG except it’s about Zela a little monster girl and her adventures in her comic realm. The thing that makes LMG NSFW is that she’s usually topless and she has large boobs. Then there is Lulu, Lulu has no knees and she has even larger boobs.

Jennifer’s other webcomic is titled There’s Something Wrong with Everyone. This is a quirky funny comic on Tapastic. This is safe for work SFW and is a bit of fun.

If you like a funny quirky read I can recommend both webcomics. Don’t expect too much from either comic and everything will be okay.

The Adventures of Choppy

So Sarah has a dog, viz., Choppy (F) and a cat, viz., Schooner (M) [BTW Jennifer has a cat too, viz., Mr Ashe]. Choppy features in four blog genres.

  1. Where’s Choppy? In these posts Sarah shoots a photograph of a scene with Choppy in it. It’s usually not obvious where Choppy is. It’s the reader’s task to find Choppy. Sarah usually follows up within a few days with the location.
  2. Howlidays are basically memes where Sarah hangs a sign around Choppy’s neck with a funny quote or slogan. Sarah also writes on a card and places it in front of Schooner’s fore paws. I’m guessing Schooner won’t let anything hang around his neck. The words on the card are usually a smart reply to the words on the sign around Choppy’s neck. Sometimes there are outtakes suggesting Schooner is very much his own cat. I’m hoping for some video violence in the future to add some excitement!
  3. Dog walk challenges are daily posts with a photograph of at least Choppy or a scene on Sarah’s walks plus some walk statistics.
  4. Corny dog jobs are irregular, associated often with holidays, but consist of up to a handful of memes featuring Choppy, usually in some fancy dress and jokes written in meme form. Most of these will give you a giggle, some make cause you to scratch your head and occasionally you will LMAO.

Choppy is a very forgiving girl and I often wonder about the relationship between her and Sarah!

Social media

You can find Sarah, Schooner and Choppy on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

You can find Jennifer and sometimes Siggi and Mr Asche on Instagram, Twitter and Twitter.

So what have I been up to over the last week?

I know you want to know what I’ve eaten and what else I’ve photographed this week!

Last night I caught up with a friend from the Northern Territory. She’s now a rural and remote general practitioner but when I knew her she was an excellent medical laboratory scientist who I worked with across the NT. She was in town for the Rural Medicine Australia conference. About nine of us dined at Aubergine. The reservation was set for 8.30 pm. That’s the time I go to bed. I was surprised I stayed awake but it was a fantastic night. I had so much fun. The food was also fantastic. We had a four-course meal plus canapes.

  1. Salad of local asparagus, crispy quail egg, grilled avocado and toasted buckwheat.
  2. Lamb rump and sweetbreads, broad beans, black garlic and celtuce.
  3. Beef rib eye, mustard butter, cippolini onion, pumpkin and zucchini.
  4. Brown butter ice cream, almond praline, and frozen lemon myrtle milk.

No photographs because I was too busy talking and eating.

Hellenic Club Chicken Schnitzel

Hellenic Club Chicken Schnitzel Three times a year we front up to provide evidence at Senate estimates. I’m in an unusual position in that I enjoy the experience.

I also have myself a little ritual, I like to go to the Hellenic Club and have a chicken schnitzel for dinner. Unlike the Tradies Club the Hellenic Club chicken schnitzel does not serve Hollandaise sauce with a schnitzel, i.e., a Courtney. That said the chicken schnitzel is quite delicious at the Hellenic club.

The schnitzel is flat and tender and well crumbed. On my latest outing I had it with the pepper sauce plus chips. This is a perfect dinner before driving up to Parliament house to appear before senators.  I just wish the Hellenic Club Chicken Schnitzel was a Courtney!

Hellenic Club chicken schnitzel

Have you enjoyed an Hellenic Club chicken schnitzel?

How do you feel about being a member of a club like the Hellenic Club. I like being able to walk in whenever I like to the Hellenic Club, The Tradies and the Canberra Southern Cross clubs. The memberships aren’t really excessive and most do a discount for members. I’ve never gambled in a club so that attraction isn’t a thing. On average, clubs in Australia serve reasonable food at reasonable prices and rather than take away fast food you can get a better option for not much more.

Canberra Food Blogger Christmas Dinner

On Wednesday night Fran the Food Marshall had arranged the Canberra Food Blogger Christmas dinner at the Southern Cross Yacht Club at Yarralumla. The SCYC is on the southwestern bank of Lake Burley Griffin. For readers outside of Australia, LBG is an artificial lake designed along with the rest of Canberra by Walter Burley Griffin. It’s not a magnificent stretch of water by any means and is frequently tested for high levels of cyanobacteria and faecal coliforms. I’m amazed when I see people using the lakes and potentially being exposed to the water.

This was my first time at the Southern Cross Yacht Club. We had a table booked at 7 pm. I arrived at 6.45 pm and found there were cars everywhere, cars were lining the streets and parked on the sidewalks as well as being parked in nondesignated areas. I went into stalking mode and did a few circuits until I saw someone getting ready to leave. She looked at me and proceeded to sit in her late model Mercedes and preened and mucked around in her hand bag and looked around. I kept smiling at her and after 3 and a bit minutes she turned on the ignition and backed out.

Out the back most of the group had already assembled and there were hors d’oeuvres on the table. Nice sized pieces of well seasoned pork belly on potato and sweet potato. Delicious. I got two so I was pretty happy.

We went upstairs and were shown to a long table. I sat next to Kristy who tells Tales of a Confectionist and Erin who dreams of almonds. Opposite was Beck who searches for golden pudding.

It was a great evening with really nice food and fantastic company. There were the odd moments like when Kristy asked to touch my head and she proceeded to stroke my scalp which had a day’s growth. One of the happy happenstances was when Beck said she couldn’t finish her pan seared scallops on black pudding with salmon eggs. I scored a big bonus.

We had agreed on Facebook earlier that we would go with the à la carte menu noting the availability of the lobster double whammy, i.e., lobster bisque and lobster thermidor. The menu items looked so appetising. I was tossing up on whether to go with scallops or oysters for an entrée (that’s a starter for north American readers) and the pork belly or rib eye fillet for the main course. In the end I went with the lobster twin-pack.

I’m glad I didn’t ask for the scallops as an entrée because we got one scallop on black pudding and salmon roe as an amuse bouche.

I really like black pudding. I really like just cooked scallops and I adore salmon roe. This was delicious.

For my entrée I had kept some of the bread and butter because a nice thick bisque needs some dipping bread I reckon. Kristy thought the same. It was funny the three Chinese people at the table all went for the lobster. Alice who is a Girl in a food frenzy also had the lobster and being the smartphone expert in photography and videography that she is, she improved the light with the aid of a white linen napkin being held up by other food bloggers. This is what I love about food bloggers, everyone is interested in bringing out their cameras and shooting the food. Anyway, the bisque had a really nice flavour. It was smooth but not too smooth. It was quite salty and I’d be okay with a little less salt but with enough still water on the table it was all good. My modified lobster bisque with pan seared scallop on black pudding with salmon roe really hit the spot.

The main courses came out after what I thought was a good interval. I didn’t time it but it wasn’t too short and when it arrived I was feeling like eating again.

The lobster was nicely cooked, well seasoned and creamy cheesy. The green vegetables were also nicely cooked, crisp and tasty. The mashed potato though wasn’t a highlight. In some ways with the creamy cheesy lobster, having more creamy potatoes may be seen as too much of a good thing. However, these mashed spuds were a little underwhelming. I think a little more seasoning and maybe some more cream or even sour cream would have made them a great match with the lobster. I shouldn’t complain though, it was a delicious meal.

After the main course a few of the party left and so with a smaller crew remaining we set about discussing dessert and the next Canberra Food Blogger get together. I looked through the dessert menu and while everything looked great I was interested in something relatively light and something with a kick. I went with an affogato. This was quite nice. The coffee was nice and strong and the ice cream was generous in serving size and flavour.

I really enjoyed the meal at the Southern Cross Yacht Club and I thought the company of my blogging mates was fabulous.

I’m already looking forward to our next get together.

I thought I’d also add some photographs from Thursday when my workplace had a Christmas Fête and market. Now, my only objection to the word fête is that when I think fête I know there will be a stall selling vanilla slices. No such luck I’m afraid.

I got to work at 6.45 am and noted a smoky scent to the air. I went to get a coffee from Urban Bean Espresso Bar and noticed they had a rotisserie spit outside with at first I thought (actually hoping) was a pig but was a lamb. Later in the morning I caught up with a mate and the spit had been moved.

Mmm… Spit roasting

A video posted by Yummy Lummy | Gary Lum (@yummylummyblog) on

At 12 noon I went to the fête and after visiting a friend who makes crafty cards. I then went in search of vanilla slice but there was none to be found. I ended my excursion outside Urban Bean Espresso Bar where there was a stall selling roast lamb rolls, roast pork rolls and nachos. Being cheeky I asked for half and half and ended up with a half lamb and half pork roll with a big ladle of gravy. The lamb was moist, tender and succulent. The pork was a little dry (I didn’t get fatty bits) but the big piece of crackling I got made up for that. It was tremendous.

By the end of the day all I wanted was a light dinner.

What did you think of the Canberra Food Blogger Christmas dinner?

The Courtney

***Check out the update below***

I have a very good friend at work who likes a chicken schnitzel. I love chicken schnitzel. This friend also likes Hollandaise sauce. I love Hollandaise sauce. He told me one of his daughters has a friend named Courtney who likes chicken schnitzel and Hollandaise sauce together. My good friend from work feels this is anathema, an abomination. I on the other hand believe this Courtney is brilliant. She is a genius. In my mind The Courtney is perfect.

I present The Courtney

This one is from the Canberra Southern Cross Club Jamison.

This week we read in the NT News (the greatest newspaper in the universe) about some Darwin lads who anonymously rate chicken parmigiana in and around Darwin. They even have a Facebook page dedicated to their quest for the perfect chook parmy.

I suggested to my friend we could do this with chook schnitty in Canberra. I reckon this would be very cool and it would see me approaching my record weight from days gone by. Perhaps not a great idea after all. I’ll reconsider the idea I think. I really need to lose some weight. Today I enjoyed my fifth episode of birthday cake. Today I was at the hospital and my doctor friends took me to afternoon tea and spoilt me with cake.

How do you feel about The Courtney?

A Courtney update

So today (Tuesday 2015-05-19) my friend (from above) from work went to The Tradies at Woden with a couple of friends and I had another Courtney. This was was pretty good.
