The Ekka 2023

Introduction

Dear Reader,

I hope you had a good week. Mine was reasonably busy.

I don’t have a recipe this week. I spent the weekend in Brisbane for my annual visit to “The Ekka” or “The Show” as we knew it as kids.

The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland hosts the Royal Queensland Show.

Mmm… Dog Sushi at The Ekka. This is a joke, I’m joking. Sushi Hub sponsors the dog and cat pavilions.

I took my daughters plus my eldest daughter’s partner and his nephew. It was the young fella’s first Ekka experience. We all wanted to make it special for him.

It was a glorious day. The sky was clear for most for the day, the sunshine was bright and brilliant, and there was little to no wind. It reached a maximum of 28 °C and it was a perfect day to convert cholesterol to vitamin D.

The Ekka main arena. Mmm… beef 🤤

One of my favourite things about The Ekka is the wood chopping competitions. We sat and watched a few events including some amazing axe men and women at the standing cut, underhand, and team sawing. The sawing event was mind blowing. Those saws are so sharp.

What have I been reading?

I elected not to tackle any new books this week. I caught up on some podcasts and read work-related journal articles.

A couple nutrition-related pieces caught my eye.

Obesity may get a new name. It’s not clear at this stage what name might be chosen because there is debate about obesity as a disease. It could simply be clinical obesity rather than obesity. Many people object to obesity being classified as a disease rather than a symptom of other diseases. The article is a simple read.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has a new name. I don’t know that I’ll remember metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). It doesn’t roll off my tongue like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. I understand the words “alcoholic” and “fatty” cause stigma for some people. The new name does convey an accurate physiological process.

What did I eat?

I declined food on the flight between Canberra and Brisbane. I noticed the other passengers were eating hot pies. Everyone had smiles on their faces. I drank mineral water.

On Saturday morning, I ventured to the local mall and sat down to beef, pork, lamb, chicken, and fungi in the form of a steak, bacon, liver, eggs, and mushrooms. There were also four packets of Lurpak® butter too.

While I was at The Ekka we did the usual visits to all the food stalls, especially in the Food Pavilion where there are often samples available to taste and try.

I enjoyed a couple of yummy olives. One had a Sichuan chilli flavour and was delicious.

I elected not to eat lunch, I wasn’t hungry, so I waited until later in the afternoon when everyone was keen to enjoy a strawberry sundae. The Ekka’s strawberry sundaes are a tradition and worth a momentary departure from my low carbohydrate, healthy fat eating lifestyle.

I savoured every lick as I moved my tongue and lips across the rich creamy ice cream and whipped cream. I slowly allowed the sweetness of the strawberries and ice cream to coat my tongue and buccal cavity. I explored the cone with the tip of my tongue making the most of every new exposure to the ice cream and strawberries. It was worth it.

I know some readers are critical of foods like ice cream, I understand why. The amount of sugar and processed chemicals is obscene. The delight it gave my daughters to sit with me and for us to each enjoy an Ekka strawberry sundae in the sunshine next to the main arena of the RNA Showgrounds while some magnificent cattle were on show was worth every gram of sucrose.

At about five o’clock we made our way to Machinery Hill to find a piece of concrete to establish a position for EkkaNITES. We took it in turns to mind our spot and bags while we foraged for something to eat for dinner. I found some roast beef while my daughters found dumplings, baos, and toasties. The young fella had his first Dagwood dog experience, and he almost inhaled it. I think we’ve turned on a love for deep fried battered pork sausage.

On Sunday morning, I found a place and enjoyed poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, bacon, and pork belly.

Poached eggs with hollandaise on bacon and pork belly. I left the muffin behind.

EkkaNITES

I love EkkaNITES which is the evening entertainment program at The Ekka. This one was pretty special. The Queensland Governor and her husband, both of whom I know personally opened the Royal Queensland Show because it was the first night of The Ekka. The Governor’s husband was my boss for three years when I was a pathology trainee. It was a little weird standing to attention in honour of Her Excellency and her husband as she inspected the Royal Queensland Show guard which comprised ninety-nine ADF members from all three services. Her personal guard consists of mounted Queensland Police. I didn’t know this, but QPOL buys former thoroughbred racehorses for the mounted police.

The other interesting aspect of the opening was praying with an Anglican Priest as he blessed the plough. This is part of Ekka tradition and is a good demonstration of the RNA’s roots in agriculture and primary production. I was surprised by the priest’s prayer, because, as a diocese, Brisbane is not regarded as evangelical which is code for the priests don’t believe the bible is the inspired Word of God. The prayer however had words I could really get behind and it made the day even better as we communed with God. Maybe the Brisbane-based priest understood that rural Queenslanders are a bit different.

The entertainment consists of a wide variety of parts, and it culminates in fireworks. The horse-work this year involved Texas Longhorn steers and a small herd of bison being mustered by stockpersons. There were some other parts which involved singing, dancing, and circus performers. This is all good stuff for those that like that sort of thing. I loved the V8 utes doing circle-work and racing around the arena. The freestyle motocross part was fantastic. Each time one of the young riders was in the air pulling and twisting his motorcycle around in what seemed to be impossible situations I was praying God would keep the rider safe on landing. It’s hard to beat the noise of V8 and motorcycle engines and the smell of ignited petrol. Give me internal combustion engines any day. They bring so much joy.

You may wonder why the horse-work involved North American bovines. The show featured a competition between an Australian stockman and an American cowboy.

EkkaNITES ends with fireworks. Each year the show seems to get better. I love fireworks and The Ekka never disappoints. The whole arena is used and the choreographed work with fire dancers, motorcyclists, scooter riders all trailing sparks and flames from back packs as they speed around and across the arena is fantastic. The music is loud. The engine noise is loud. The smell of smoke and exploding fireworks along with ICE exhaust fills the nostrils. It’s a fitting climax to what was a fantastic day. I was spent afterwards and slept well.

Airport drama

I’m posting this from Brisbane airport. My flight home has been cancelled so I’m waiting to see what might be available later tonight.

Flying this weekend hasn’t been good. My flight from Canberra to Brisbane was delayed by three hours.

I don’t know what time I’ll be home tonight.

Have a good week.

Potato and leek soup with beef short rib

Hello Reader,

I hope you have enjoyed the last week. I shared a scheduled post last weekend because I was away in Brisbane to see my daughters and parents.

A few of us went to The Ekka. It was so good.

Recipe

Equipment

  • Pressure cooker [1]
  • Stick blender

Ingredients

  • Potatoes
  • Leek [2]
  • Beef short rib [3, 4]
  • Bouquet garni
  • Vegetable stock
  • Chillies
  • Parsley
  • Garlic

Instructions

  1. Wake up wondering what to cook on a wet winter day in Canberra. Do you wake up and immediately think of food? Sometimes I do. This morning I did not. I slept poorly, and when my eyes opened, my first thought was craving more sleep.
  2. Go grocery shopping to plan what to cook while in the meat section.
  3. Choose a couple of beef short ribs to be the meal’s centrepiece.
  4. Heat the oven to about 200 °C.
  5. Cut a couple of potatoes into large chunks.
  6. Cut the white part of a large leek from the green part and then separate the leaves under running water to wash out the dirt.
  7. Peel a few garlic cloves.
  8. Spread the ribs, potato, leek, and garlic onto a baking sheet and put it into the oven.
  9. Keep an eye on the tray and remove the tray when the food starts to change colour and caramelise.
  10. Put the chillies, garlic, leek, and potato into the pressure cooker.
  11. Add the bouquet garni and the ribs on top.
  12. Pour in some vegetable stock.
  13. Seal the lid to the pressure cooker and set the timer to one hour.
  14. Cook the contents.
  15. Remove the lid when the pressure has equalised.
  16. Lift out the ribs, the meat, and the bouquet garni.
  17. Put the meat into a bowl, and with forks, pull the meat.
  18. Process the soup with a stick blender.
  19. Place some of the meat into the centre of a soup bowl.
  20. Ladle the soup around the meat.
  21. Garnish the soup with parsley.
  22. Give thanks to the Lord.
  23. Eat with a spoon.

Thoughts on the meal

I could have made this soup more decadent with cream and perhaps some butter. However, cream and butter were unnecessary for flavour. There’s also enough fat in the beef.

I have enough soup leftover for a few more meals. I’ve aliquoted the soup into vacuum bags, and the bags are in the freezer.

Final thoughts

How do you feel about carnival food? Do you like deep-fried sausages covered in the batter? Do you like battered chicken nuggets with hot chips, bacon pieces, cheese, and spring onion?

Would you add cream and butter to potato and leek soup?

Augmenting duck fat with pyramid power

Do you remember when pyramid power was all the rage?

You’d go to The Ekka in Brisbane or any of the other shows, fairs, and fetes; and someone would be trying to flog the enormous health and financial benefits of pyramid power by sitting in a pyramid or storing your valuables in a pyramid. Apparently, pyramid power can sharpen your razors too. Somehow, the wealth and the alleged immortality of the pharaohs would rub off on you if you used pyramids in your life. What a load of rubbish. The pharaohs died and their wealth wasted. They should have shared the wealth amongst their people to enrich their society.

Quackery

It all fits in with the general quackery we see today and the charlatans who are trying to rip people off with unproven and unscientific treatments. What’s worse is when con artists trick you out of your money by applying a veneer of science to their deception. I see it regularly and it makes my blood boil. The amount of money these people demand to treat you is ridiculous. I came across one today which offers a payment plan linked to a credit company so your payment totalling thousands of dollars can be made weekly or monthly. I wonder what the interest rate is.

Entrepreneurial spirit

That said, with an entrepreneurial spirit I wonder if I could make money that way?

Just imagine, I could sell a three-sided pyramid made from chicken drumsticks as a super pyramid that meant anything cooked within would taste better and be better for you. It would be the ultimate in wellness and healthfulness. Turkey drumsticks would be better and goose drumsticks better again. After all, bigger is better. For a family feast, can you imagine using three drumsticks from emus and cassowaries? My version of a turducken would be cooking something under the concentric three sides of a pyramid made with turkey, duck and chicken drumsticks. Nine legs have to be better than three right! And three squared is nine and we all know that squaring something adds power.

Orgasmic, multiorgasmic even

I give you my life giving, life saving, life maintaining, life-sustaining duck fat roast potatoes made with pyramid power. A three-sided chicken drumstick pyramid to be precise. Eating these spuds laden in saturated duck fat will give you a longer better healthful life and better sex with amazing orgasms. Hang on, I should add the word organic because that’s what the confidence trick is all about. When people add organic to the name of a food they must really mean it will be orgasmic because really, organic means it contains carbon, as in organic chemistry. Think of that, you can have orgasmic chemistry!!! That would have been much more interesting to study at high school and university. You could write romance novels about couples with orgasmic chemistry!

Carbon is good

It’s remarkable that people mistakenly believe carbon is bad when it’s the basis for life on earth as we know it. When did some moron determine that carbon dioxide (CO2) could be shortened to simply carbon? Even worse is the shortening of “carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and perfluorocarbons” to just carbon. It’s idiotic. What are people being taught in school these days?

So to cure erectile dysfunction and to help achieve longer multiple orgasms, I recommend “organic pyramid power spuds, roasted in duck fat and cooked under three chicken drumsticks shaped into a three-sided super pyramid”.

So, anyway, whatevs. Here’s my dinner. Three chicken drumsticks, a spud roasted in duck fat, and some avocado with chillies and spring onion in it.

Parting words

I regularly post photographs of food to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Please feel free to connect with me on any social media platform.
I also have a podcast. It’s not food related but each show is short and it’s named Medical Fun Facts. You can find it in the iTunes podcast store as well as Stitcher. A show drops every Monday and Tuesday. It has a little cynicism, a little scepticism and occasionally some sarcasm.

The #Ekka 2015

I love The Ekka (aka the exhibition or the Royal Queensland Show). Every year I try to go. This year I’d booked tickets and had been chatting about it with my daughters for months. There was a new nights show we all wanted to see.

I flew up on Friday evening on Qantas Flight (QF) 1554 and when I arrived Dad was watching the Brisbane Broncos defeat the team from Illawarra.

After a restless sleep the girls and I went to Westfield Chermside to get some groceries for Mum and grab a bite to eat for breakfast.

I went with a nice slice of coconut loaf and a tall white chocolate mocha.

We picked up Miss14 and Miss18 at 2 pm and proceeded to Wooloowin Train Station to catch a train to Fortitude Valley Station and then the Loop ride.

When we arrived we went straight to the racing pigs to check out how these little porkers run around a ring and dive into a pool of water.

We then went to the food pavilion and checked out the free tasting treats. We had caramelised onion dip, doughnuts, bread, meatballs and other samples. We then went through and bought some dumplings and samosas. They were delicious.

Next on the list of things to do was the cake decoration display.

We’d agreed that at around 4.45 pm we’d wander over to the main arena to settle in for the evening’s entertainment. But before that we had one very important thing to do.

The best ice cream in the whole world is the strawberry sundae made by volunteers for The Prince Charles Hospital. If you’ve never had one you need to go to The Ekka and try one. They are so good when I worked at The Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1995 we used to go over everyday and get someone on the inside to buy a tray for us and bring them back to the laboratory.

After inhaling the ice cream we went to the main arena and sat on Machinery Hill.

We watched the horse whisperers and then the wood chop and then the rest of the light entertainment waiting for the monster trucks, motorcycles and drift cars.

I apologise these photographs are pretty crap. They’re mostly unprocessed and RAW out of the camera. I used a long lens with an aperture that was too small. The shutter speed was too long for sharp shots. I hope the ‘vibe’ of the photographs are okay.

Have you ever been to The Ekka? How did you spend your weekend?

What I ate and did this weekend

I’ve had a good weekend. I’ve been doing a two day learning course on Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. I’ve been using Lightroom for a couple of years but I know very little about Photoshop. It was a really good experience. The weekend was arranged by the Canberra School of Photography and the teacher was David Harradine. I’d happily recommend courses by Irene Lorbergs at CSP and David from whack.com.au

I’ve also eaten well this weekend mind you at the course I ate nut muesli bars, potato chips and diet coke.

Check out this gallery for some of what I ate and some stuff I learnt about layers and masks in Photoshop.
