Winter has arrived so it’s time for the winter avi | #bestblogs13

Okay it’s not really winter yet. Winter starts in June. In Canberra though the rules are that heaters should not be turned on until after ANZAC day (25 April) and they should not be used after the Melbourne Cup has run (the first Tuesday of November). There are also some similar rules about basil and tomatoes but they relate mainly to frost.

Out of all the capital cities in Australia, Canberra is the coldest and the driest. For me that makes it the most uncomfortable and frustrating place to live. This week has seen the weather settle into cold. We’ve even had some subzero mornings. I wouldn’t mind the cold if it wasn’t accompanied with the dryness. I have ichthyosis vulgaris, basically dry cracked hairless skin. I’m forever applying moisturiser and my skin feels cracked dry and at least once a day there is a degree of pain.

As a kid growing up in Brisbane I didn’t hang with my school mates or university friends that much. They were mostly well to do people who were a bit too sophisticated for me. I should qualify and say that after I started fourth year university I got into a friendlier group at university and hung out with them a lot more. Anyway my friends were from the neighborhood and we all liked cars. A couple of mates were doing apprenticeships as fitters and turners and another worked as a bank clerk. We liked V8 sedans and station wagons. I was into Mopar and Ford and my friends were into Holdens and makes from the GM stable like Chevrolets. In Brisbane such people were known as Bevans as distinct from Bogans. I’m not going to try to explain what a Bogan is. I think the term is misused and I think it’s used cruelly to describe people who are misunderstood.

The point of mentioning Bevans is that they had a standard winter garb. Jeans and a flanny. That is, a flannelette shirt. My winter avi reflects that.

I’ll write about my car history another time.

For now though I hope this post doesn’t scare anyone and given I’m doing it on an iPad I hope it works okay.

Frustrations with a swollen MacBook battery | #bestblogs13

This is a short post with no images. I’ve discovered my beloved MacBook has a swollen battery and I need to hand it over tomorrow afternoon to the Apple store to have it replaced. The older MacBooks had accessible battery compartments for simple replacement. The newer ones do not.

I’ve been doing a little browsing and discovered this is a constant problem for many MacBook iterations. It seems Apple has known about this for some time.

While I can still blog, tweet and post images to instagram from my iPad and iPhone it’s not quite the same without my MacBook. Certainly blogging won’t be as good in the sense it will be more fiddly to add images.

What frustrates me more is that I will be without my beloved MacBook for between five and seven days according to the Apple store employee I just spoke with.

So while I will continue to try to be a good blogger, if the quality is less than optimal it’s because I’m using my iPad or iPhone instead.

My prize meat tray | Thank you @2CC and Elite Meats | #bestblogs13

A month or so ago Radio Station @2CC in Canberra was running a “best of” Canberra competition.

2CC is a talkback station with a fairly balanced political position. It takes programming from Sydney and Melbourne which is mostly just right of centre and it has two local announcers/broadcasters for the breakfast (Mark Parton) and afternoon (Mike Welsh) drive programs who balance each other out.

These images were taken from the 2CC website (see below)

On the day I won the meat, the “best of” topic was public art. Canberra has a significant recent history in terms of the public debate on public art. There are a good many residents who think the ACT Government has wasted vast amounts of tax payers money on what many regard as monstrosities and hideous insights into warped imaginations.

I’ve always thought a city, especially a national capital should be replete with public art. I really like the public art in Canberra and my favourite is the Owl Statue on the T-junction of Belconnen Way and Benjamin Way.

Thank you @2CC and Elite Meats Kippax for my prize pack

Bron and I went to Elite Meats in Kippax Fair in Holt and looked over the butcher’s shop. The butcher who looked after us was very friendly and very helpful. I’m pretty sure I’ll go back there to buy more meat. Over time I’m bound to post images from this selection of meat :-)

Thank you 2CC and Elite Meats for the meat tray.

Mamak in Haymarket | #ManFlu | #bestblogs13

Last year Bron visited this place while in Sydney. She came back raving about it and how good the food is. We’re here in Sydney for a few things this weekend. So we thought we’d try out Mamak in Haymarket. It’s the sort of place that’s so popular they don’t take reservations and you need to queue to get in. I don’t mind queueing for something good. We had a dilemma on timing. We’d gone for a walk around Darling Harbour and checked out an Adriano Zumbo Pâtissier at The Star. We ventured into Chinatown to look around and given the opening time of Mamak was 1730 AEDT we just hung around. At about 1715 AEDT we walked around to Mamak and a queue had already started to form. We crossed the road and joined it.

We've joined the queue 😃

The group waiting was a good mixture of people from a range of backgrounds.

Amazing lamb curry #dinner #yummy

Kari kambing. Spicy lamb curry slow-cooked until tender. This was the best lamb curry I’ve eaten in a long time. The meat was fall apart tender and so rich in flavour that it penetrated the glugginess of my #ManFlu and gave me a good warm feeling all over (no it wasn’t the fever of the #ManFlu).  Check the YouTube video below embedded in the post.

Ayam goreng. Malaysian-style fried chicken. Marinated with herbs and spices and full of flavour. Eat your heart out Colonel Sanders. This was so much better than KFC and really finger licking good.

At first we wondered if we needed rice and thought about getting a plain roti. We had kept about four pieces of lamb and the curry set aside and asked for another plain roti. This was perfect and I was so keen on it I forgot to capture an image. Rather than flat it came out scrunched like a sponge. It was pretty good and the last of that lamb curry went down a treat.

We would like to have tried the sweet roti but after five dishes we were too full. We’ll have to come back. Watching the kitchen team was amazing as they made the roti on a hot plates.

Irritable bowel syndrome and public toilets

I have mild irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). I’ve learnt the importance of routines and the types of food I should keep to (mostly). This is difficult when I love trying so many different types of food and when my jobs in the past had a lot of travel or long distance driving. I’m a big fan of twice daily Metamucil and keeping very regular. I really do not like change or unexpected changes to my routines and habits. The feeling of urgency and being caught short and the potential for a very embarrassing result is enough to torment me regularly.

It’s great that in Australia we are blessed with abundant free public toilets in shopping centres and most public spaces. The threat of some idiot wanting to blow up a toilet block or having someone loitering for illicit purposes is pretty low here. My major gripe though is the use of bulk dispensers of really cheap and nasty toilet paper. What I really dislike are the ones that have huge rolls of paper without  perforations and often the free end gets caught up within the dispenser making it really difficult to get paper out.

This is a good example.

I should have also added this amazing website funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Health and Ageing (The department I work for). http://www.toiletmap.gov.au/

ANZAC Day post

To those who have served Australia,
THANK YOU.

To those who have lost sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters to protect our country,
THANK YOU.

To those who have mourned the loss of loves ones as they fought for freedom,
I feel for you and THANK YOU.

To those who are serving Australia today and making a difference to countless lives around the world,
THANK YOU.

I will not forget.

Today I wanted to do something that involved a product of New Zealand. However, there has recently been some controversy in the news because a journalist from New Zealand called Australian soldiers lazy bludgers (http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/last-post-first-light/6792303/No-apology-over-dig-at-Aussie-soldiers). That gave me a reason to pause and reconsider. Rather than something obvious like lamb I chose tinned beef. Bully Beef (bully beef; from the French bouilli “boiled”) is the name of a tinned meat that soldiers ate in the field. Soldiers’ only food was whatever they had carried ashore in their packs. Apparently for several days on end all they had to eat was a little bully beef, some tea, sugar and a few very hard biscuits from the ship. (Reference http://www.anzacday.org.au/education/afor/afor-b.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corned_beef)

Now who can forget some of my special corned beef dishes? My Man versus Food version and my previous sausage roll.

New Zealand Corned Beef (Nikon D90)

For lunch I made myself a sausage roll with the corned beef. I added a little flavour with GOA beef curry powder and an onion. I also added a little Worcestershire sauce (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcestershire_sauce).

One of the other flavourings for today is rosemary. I didn’t realise until recently what the significance of rosemary is for ANZAC day. A sprig of rosemary is worn on ANZAC day. It is an emblem of both fidelity and remembrance in literature and folklore. It is found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula. (Reference http://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/customs/rosemary.asp, http://www.theradish.com.au/rosemary-for-remembrance-677/, http://www.anzacday.org.au/education/tff/rosemary.html, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_Day). Today I acquired my rosemary outside of Swimming Australia on Beissel Street in Belconnen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimming_Australia). This is particularly apt given it’s an Olympic year and my favourite sport is swimming.

Dinner was a surprise and by surprise I just put stuff into a saucepan and hoped for the best. It was surprisingly good. I did the usual sauteing of onions, garlic and ginger. To this I added some diced tomatoes and then diced chicken thigh meat. After everything was soft I added Mudgeeraba Parsee Chicken and Potato curry powder. I added some sliced potato and sweet potato and then put the lid on the saucepan and kept it simmering for three hours. With half an hour to go I added some beans, corn and mushrooms. I served it with noodles.

My Easter wrap up

Okay, I’ve already posted four blogs this weekend. This is my wrap up blog post to cover the stuff I didn’t mention previously in:

Hot cross buns and butter,
Who would be a ram,
Ribs and rumps, and
I love cake decorating.

So clearly we went to the Sydney Royal Easter Show in Sydney Olympic Park. I love shows. I reckon The Ekka in Brisbane is by far the best show in the world and then perhaps Sydney. I’m also very partial to the Royal Darwin Show.

The first thing we did was check out Flyball. I’d never heard of it before until I received a tweet from Al to check it out. It is basically dog drag racing and very entertaining. I took a few short videos and put them together.

We spent an enjoyable few hours watching some wood chop, ring events (Shetland pony showing), we explored the food and produce stall to check out the giant pumpkins, flowers, pies, other food and the cake decorating. We wandered through many of the animal pavilions and saw that ram. We also had to get a Dagwood Dog. When I say we, I mean me, and for those who don’t know me, whenever I go to a show I eat a Dagwood Dog. This Courier Mail article is helpful and points one of the biggest reasons why The Ekka trounces the Sydney Royal Easter Show, viz., the Strawberry Sundae at The Ekka. There is also a Facebook page for Dagwood Dogs. The Strawberry Sundae at The Ekka is made by volunteers and is made from fresh full cream milk and fresh locally grown strawberries. It is unique to The Ekka. When I worked at The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, we used to get a tray sent back to the laboratory at lunch time every day of The Ekka as a treat.

Giant pumpkins, these were huge. One was 430 kg.

We got three chunky lamb shank pies for $10. A perfect lunch.

Choc vanilla ice cream sandwich. The perfect way to complete lunch.

On Sunday morning we visited the Lindt Café at Darling Habour for a chocolate breakfast and to buy some macarons. I had a iced mocha with chocolate profiteroles followed by a chocolate eclair with a flat white coffee. We also bought macarons. I bought Excellence 70%, Passion fruit, Vanilla, Pistachio, Champagne and Salted caramel. Nat at work is an expert macaron maker and she recommended the Lindt macarons and I have to say they were amazing.

Unfortunately the profiteroles were served cold and not at room temperature.

Lindt chocolate eclair

Excellence 70% and Passion fruit. The passion fruit was best.

Champagne and Pistachio. The Pistachio was amazing.

Vanilla and salted caramel. I had a foodgasm after eating these. :-)

What can I say, it’s been a busy and enjoyable Easter. Today I did some work and tomorrow I’ll be back in the office thinking about the good times.

I love competition cake decorating

Okay it sounds weird. Not many men would admit it. My middle daughter loves cake decorating and my Mum was fantastic at it. I don’t do it, I just like looking at it at shows. Weather it’s The Ekka or the Sydney Royal Easter Show, I always look at the cake decorating.

I went a little crazy with the iPhone. I love the Mr Squiggle and Blackboard cake. The giant macarons also reminded me of tomorrow’s macaron visit. When there are too many images a slide show is best.
