State of Origin

2016 has been a good year for State of Origin. The Queensland XXXX Maroons (pronounced ma-rones) had already wrapped up the series by winning the first two games. I missed both games because of other commitments. I was keen to watch the third game in the comfort of my apartment with food I had prepared.

The food

Now when I say food I had prepared I really mean heating up food I had purchased which was ready to cook.

Being a Queenslander I was keen on some simple treats that I grew up with. I went with cheerios and macaroni cheese.

The food itself was pretty yummy. I was satisfied.

The game

The game however was another story altogether. In what is normal for #Origin it was a nail biter right to the end.

There had been a lot of pregame niggle mainly from the Victoria Bitter New South Wales Blues (pronounced cock-roaches) captain, the self confessed performance enhancing drug using Paul Gallen. Gallen had labelled all Queenslanders as poor winners. Sadly at the end of the match it looked like Paul Gallen was a poor winner himself.

So for readers who aren’t familiar with Rugby League and State of Origin if you type “Yummy Lummy State of Origin” into Google you’ll come across many posts that describe my love of Rugby League (the greatest code of football played in Australia), my love of State of Origin as a competition between the greatest states in Australia (note the Northern Territory of Australia is not a state so the fact I love it more than NSW and about the same as Queensland [at least the Top End of the NT] should not suggest I have lost my passion for the NT), and how strongly I feel about being a Queenslander. State of Origin is simply the greatest sporting rivalry and competition bar none.

Last night the game had so many highlights. The lead changed throughout, Queensland demonstrated outstanding defence in the face of very strong attack, both sides lost players to the sin bin for infractions, there was simmering tension with the odd punch thrown and in the end in the final minutes NSW took the lead and Paul Gallen the NSW skipper converted the try in a fitting finish for a retiring stalwart of the game. As much as he is a player Queenslanders love to hate, he’s a tough bloke and a strong player. He’s also been an inspiring captain for NSW. Paul Gallen has an outstanding record for NSW. He’s captained the side for 11 straight years for 10 series’ losses. His loss:win ratio is better than any captain in the history of State of Origin.

So if you watched the game, what did you eat? What did you think of the game? Did you enjoy the refereeing?

For a bit of fun

What sort of coward is James Maloney running away and hiding behind his mates after shoving Corey Parker?

Footy food for state of origin 1

Every state of origin match like a grand final needs footy food. In fact state of origin is more important than a grand final or an international test match so the food needs to be super tasty and super simple.

I started the day with a small simple breakfast with a big dinner in mind.

For lunch I made a smoked salmon, Coon cheese, cream cheese and lettuce toasted sandwich with jalapeño avocado spread.

So for dinner I started with meat chips. These are slices of salami cooked in a hot oven and allowed to cool to a crunchy chip. I served these with cream cheese with chives and spring onion. That makes up this evening’s vegetables

For my main meal I bought 500 grams of chicken wings. I specified the forearm equivalent, i.e., the radius and ulna and not the humerus. I reckon this has the most tender meat and when it’s cooked well it falls from the bones easily. I coated the chicken with oil and panko crumbs and added some chicken salt, golden syrup and chili flakes. I put them into an oven at 150 °C for 45 minutes.

So this is the footy food I had tonight for game 1 of the 2015 state of origin series.

I ended up finishing it before the game started. Kick off is meant to be at 8 pm but channel 9 never seems to get it right. The pre-game mucking around with singing songs no one understands and then listening to someone butcher our national anthem pushed the kick off to about 8.20 pm. I still reckon a sure winner for the national anthem is a school choir. What a thrill would it be for them to sing the national anthem for the greatest sporting event that happens three times a year for the greatest game of all.

I kept sane by listening to the game on the ABC Radio app rather than listen to the Channel 9 broadcast. There was about a 30 second delay on the telecast but it meant I didn’t have to listen to Phil Gould and Andrew Johns.

In the end Queensland defeated New South Wales 11:10. It was a tough tight game. Bring on game 2.

What footy food will you have for game 2?

Footy food for State of Origin game two

Tonight is game two in this year’s state of origin series. On the old blog you can find many posts about state of origin and where my allegiances lie. Needless to say the photograph of me on my about page has the Queensland flag as a background. The Maroon jumper I wear in my twitter and instagram avatars says it all QUEENSLANDER!!!

On the way home tonight I stopped at Jamison Takeaway in the Jamison Plaza and bought some potato scallops and calamari rings to snack on while I cooked my dinner.

Sorry it’s a little blurry. I was so excited about eating them 🙂

A need to do a shout out to the lovely ladies at the Jamison Takeaway. They always give me an extra potato scallop. They are the best.

For dinner I made honey soy chicken wings. They make great footy food. Click on the image if you want to see a bigger version.
