One of my most visited posts here is How long does it take to cook a Coles chicken Kiev? from about this time last year.

Now that I have my MEATER® I thought it would be useful to work out how long it would take using a little measurement science.

I couldn’t get any pieces of chicken Kiev from the delicatessen section at Coles, so I bought some Coles branded chicken Kiev from the frozen food section.

I had to wait for the pieces to thaw before I could bury the MEATER® deep into the chicken Kiev. I did worry that it may allow seepage of garlicky cheesy goodness during the cooking process around the shaft of the MEATER®.

In addition to the chicken Kiev I prepared a fennel salad and when I say prepared, I had leftover fennel salad vacuum packed using my Sunbeam FoodSaver®.

Ingredients
  • 1 Piece Chicken Kiev
  • 1 Slice Swiss cheese Place this on the chicken
  • 12 Pieces Potato gems (Tater tots)
  • 1 Cup Beetroot coleslaw
  • 2 Tablespoons Garlic aioli
Instructions
  1. Put the chicken topped with Swiss cheese along with the potato gems into a large non-stick frying pan and put into a hot (200 °C/400 °F) oven for 40 minutes.

Recipe Notes

There's nothing to really prepare for this meal. All the ingredients were purchased from Coles and then put together. The chicken and potato gems need cooking and then after letting the chicken rest for 10 minutes, I added the coleslaw and aioli.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the Coles Chicken Kiev like?

Not too bad. I’ve had better, but this was quite edible and the garlic and cheese was nice. The crumb could have been better. To be far, the person who served me was a little rough and knocked some of the bread crumb coating off.

Would you call it value for money?

The delicatessen at Coles sells the Chicken Kiev at a fairly cheap price, so yes, I’d regard it as value for money.

Are you sponsored by Coles?

No, I get no support or sponsorship for anything on this blog.

At the delicatessen

When you’re at the delicatessen in a supermarket like Coles and you see something like ready prepared Chicken Kiev, there’s never a sign with cooking instructions on it. I assume, the people on staff just assume you know how long to cook them otherwise you’d be buying them in a packet (with directions on the back) from the freezer section right?

Food safety

Well with the amount of salmonella in Canberra lately, there is a clear message to cook your chicken thoroughly. That’s why I chose 200 °C (400 °F) for 40 minutes. Given the breast has been stuffed with garlic and butter and I’ve added a layer of cheese, it’s important to get the inside to a good high killing temperature.

What I ate today

It’s been a while since I wrote a “what I ate today” post. It’s been awhile since I’ve written a post. I’ve been pretty busy with work. I arrived home from Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon and on Tuesday evening I was in Melbourne for an all day work appointment on Wednesday.

So before I can today write about today I have to mention last night. I was invited to dinner by friends Peter and Li Peng. Peter is a fabulous cook. Peter is also a dab hand at back yard construction. He’s built himself a pizza oven from scratch. It’s pretty impressive. In winter it’ll warm up a suburb I reckon. For dinner we started with some mouth watering and refreshing nummus and nuts. For a main course we had a delicious pizza and for dessert Peter had made tiramisu. In my mind everything was perfect. The tiramisu was bloody amazing. A perfect combination of cake, cream, and coffee.

So today I started with cold leftover homemade pizza and tiramisu. I justify the tiramisu for breakfast on the basis it had coffee and cream in it.

Being Friday I was working in ACT Pathology at The Canberra Hospital and today was our work Christmas lunch.

I forgot to add the prawns, egg based slices, cured meats and all the other salads. I did eat lots of kale and quinoa salad too.

I forgot to shoot a photograph of the black forest cake, salted caramel cheesecake and pavlova.

For dinner I rounded out the day with the last of the pizza and tiramisu while drinking Agrum in my LMG glass.

In other news Peter and Li Peng made me a Christmas hamper all contained in a colander

On Wednesday morning I had a hotel breakfast

The room also had a decent coffee machine. I’m just glad George Clooney wasn’t around.
