Chicken schnitzel

Weekend recovery

A weekend recovery is what I needed. I’ve recently spent two weeks in Manila for work and ended up getting respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses. Suffice to say I still have a hacking cough which has also given me a sore back and my bowels still feel a little delicate although I feel a lot better now that I can control what I’m eating and breathing fresh air.

On Thursday night I watched Maeve O’Meara on Food Safari on SBS and she did a segment on Pialligo Estate artisan bacon. It’s my favourite bacon. It’s also local bacon smoked in Canberra. I decided I buy some for the weekend.

Friday night I made myself chicken thigh schnitzel burger inspired by Hilah Johnson.

For Saturday breakfast I made myself a Pialligo Estate streaky bacon and fried egg roll.

For lunch I felt like some raw onion and coleslaw with cream cheese

For dinner I made a chicken schnitzel sandwich.

I felt well enough on Sunday to go for a walk around Lake Ginninderra

But for breakfast I had some melted cheese on toast

For lunch after I did my ironing and watched an episode of Star Trek TNG I made myself a Pialligo Estate streaky bacon cheeseburger

For dinner on Sunday I slowly roasted some blade beef with some quinoa and vegetables. I had enough left over for two more meals.

The meat just fell apart as I pressed down with my knife.

How often do you need a weekend recovery?

Monday link love

It’s been awhile since I’ve done this properly. Each Monday the members of the Canberra Food Bloggers Facebook group share blog posts. Today here is a selection of those shared.

Hellenic Club Chicken Schnitzel

Hellenic Club Chicken Schnitzel Three times a year we front up to provide evidence at Senate estimates. I’m in an unusual position in that I enjoy the experience.

I also have myself a little ritual, I like to go to the Hellenic Club and have a chicken schnitzel for dinner. Unlike the Tradies Club the Hellenic Club chicken schnitzel does not serve Hollandaise sauce with a schnitzel, i.e., a Courtney. That said the chicken schnitzel is quite delicious at the Hellenic club.

The schnitzel is flat and tender and well crumbed. On my latest outing I had it with the pepper sauce plus chips. This is a perfect dinner before driving up to Parliament house to appear before senators.  I just wish the Hellenic Club Chicken Schnitzel was a Courtney!

Have you enjoyed an Hellenic Club chicken schnitzel?

How do you feel about being a member of a club like the Hellenic Club. I like being able to walk in whenever I like to the Hellenic Club, The Tradies and the Canberra Southern Cross clubs. The memberships aren’t really excessive and most do a discount for members. I’ve never gambled in a club so that attraction isn’t a thing. On average, clubs in Australia serve reasonable food at reasonable prices and rather than take away fast food you can get a better option for not much more.

Schnitz at Woden What I ate today

I went out to lunch today with a few friends to Schnitz at Woden. Schnitz is a franchise from Melbourne and it specialises in chicken, beef and fish schnitzel. I wasn’t aware that you could get beef and fish schnitzel. I thought you could get chicken and veal schnitzel. Otherwise it’s just crumbed fish and steak. They also do crumb-free schnitzel which IMHO is just wrong.

Anyway I started the day with some avocado and pickled ginger on toasted Rye.

For lunch I had a chicken schnitzel with chips and sweet chilli mayonnaise. It was okay. The schnitzel was on the small side but the chips were very tasty.

Have you tried schnitz? How do you feel about a crumb-free schnitzel?

Today’s #aussiespears food adventure

Yesterday I wrote about receiving a box of Australian asparagus from the Australian Asparagus Council. It was a sort of unboxing post like the unboxing YouTube videos of camera equipment I like.

This morning I had tinned spaghetti on toasted rye bread with a couple of baby #aussiespears

For lunch I went to The Tradies at Woden with a mate and enjoyed eating Courtney.

I hope I can get through all the asparagus.

What I ate today

I had a great day today at the hospital. Lots of interesting patient results and discussions with referring medical practitioners both within and without the hospital. I had some great conversations with my work mates too. One of the highlights was a lunch visit from a mate from my other work. The same mate who recently left the department to go work in another department. He gave me an amazing gift. A print of one of my favourite bacteria, viz., Burkholderia pseudomallei.

So what did I eat today? For breakfast I enjoyed an English muffin with baked beans and Worcestershire sauce on one half and Buderim Ginger Factory ginger marmalade on the other half. When I got to the hospital I had a nice prework coffee. For lunch I didn’t go low fat, instead I enjoyed a chicken schnitzel with chips and gravy with my mate. I felt like I had betrayed Courtney. For dinner I had a salmon cake inside an English muffin with lettuce, avocado and tomato.
