Curried salmon

Liebster Award

Thank you Taryn @ The Wooden Spoons for nominating me for a Liebster Award. Taryn suggested at the end of her post that her nominees were under no obligation to pass this on, so I’ll make a compromise and answer the questions and share some random facts.

Taryn’s questions

  1. Which post on your blog are you most proud of? I wrote a post a couple of years ago on the 10 year remembrance of the Bali bombings in 2002
  2. What is your current favourite blog that you read? It’s hard to say what my favourite blog is. Many of Taryn’s nominees I would include as well as Veronica from short and sweet, Lorraine from Not Quite Nigella and Hannah from wayfaringchocolate. One of the nice things about the Canberra food blogging scene is the sense of community we have. We have our own Facebook page and I love reading Canberra Food Blogger blogs 😀
  3. Where is the next restaurant that you would like to eat at? I’d like to try Biota in Bowral.
  4. If you had an unexpected free day what would you do? I’d go to Flue Bakery in Fyshwick and enjoy some pastries and cakes in the morning and then at lunch time enjoy some hot pies.
  5. What camera do you use to take your photos? At home I have a little ‘studio’ set up and I use my Nikon D7100 with a 40 mm macro or a Tamron 90 mm macro lens. When I’m in restaurants I tend to use my iPhone 6 Plus.
  6. What is your most disliked food? Green beans. They squeak on my teeth.
  7. What is the last thing that you ate? I just polished off a curried salmon with brown rice and coconut cream. I’ve posted an image below 😀
  8. Which country’s cuisine is your favourite? Australian everyday food although being Chinese I’m partial to Chinese food. My favourite meals are congee and wonton soup.
  9. Where would you like your next holiday to be? Hawaii so I can gorge on the spam repertoire.
  10. What movie did you last see and did you enjoy it? Last night I watched Star Trek Into Darkness. I love Star Trek and yesterday I did a binge watch of tribble associated episodes including episodes from The Original Series, The Animated Series, Deep Space 9 and of course from the Jar Jar Abrams universe, Star Trek Into darkness.
  11. What are your ambitions for your blog in 2015? I’d like to be able to blog daily.

Some random facts about me

  • I can’t sing. In grade three my school’s music teacher told me I was the worst in the class. In Sunday school I was asked to mouth.
  • I turn 50 this year.
  • I have Ichthyosis vulgaris and irritable bowel syndrome.
  • I was disqualified from a national science competition in 1982 because I used live animals in my experiments.
  • I’ve owned three V8 Falcons and I before I die I want to own another V8 Ford whether it be a Mustang or a F250 pickup truck.
  • My favourite car though was my 1978 CL Chrysler Regal with a 265 ci hemi.
  • I look Chinese but I’m a fifth generation Australian. I speak with a broad strine that confounds some people.

Thanks again Taryn for the award

Curried salmon

It’s Monday so that means salmon. I’ve eaten salmon every Monday in 2014. Tonight I cooked curried salmon for Mum, Dad, Miss13 and Miss17. Miss19 is working tonight.

Cooking a kilogram of salmon with the skin on isn’t quite like cooking one portion for myself

Miss17 helped with the salad again which was good. I prepared the vermicelli by soaking it in room temperature water for 15 minutes and then draining the water.

I cooked the salmon in the same way I usually do. I rubbed in some curry powder and oil and then laid the portions out on a hot frying pan and put the lid on top for 5 minutes. I then poured in a tin of coconut cream and then added the vermicelli and then another tin of coconut cream. I broke up the salmon in the frying pan while cooking through the vermicelli and coconut cream.

The salad had mango, avocado, cucumber, cos lettuce, nectarines and tomatoes in it.

1 vanilla slice, 1 cottage pie and salmon

So today ends the driving portion of my short holiday. I woke up in Wangaratta after another crapulent sleep and after not seeing the kettle yesterday when I checked in found the kettle and some instant coffee. After a shower I packed up and set off for Beechworth. I had been told by a number of friends that the best bakery to visit in Victoria is the Beechworth Bakery just east of Wangaratta. I thought a detour was in order.

My jeans are already tight and what is a few more calories going to change?

I plan to write a specific post about vanilla slices on this trip so I won’t go into detail about what I think makes for a good vanilla slice. Suffice to say, the vanilla slice from the Beechworth bakery is good but not amazingly good and is still not a patch on the Gumnut Patisserie in Bowral. The pink icing was subtle with little or no flavour besides the sweetness of the sugar. The custard had a very nice flavour and the custard wasn’t too gelatinous, and was probably the best custard of this trip.

This bakery though has another pastry that I adore and again it’s a custard filled pastry. Can you guess what I’m buzzing at? That’s a clue there too.

Take a look at this photograph and you’ll know what I mean.

Beechworth Bakery

So my next stop was in Holbrook, I’d already tried the central Holbrook Bakery so today I went to the southern one and enjoyed a cottage pie. So far on this trip every bakery I’ve been in hasn’t had a potato pie, either they had sold out or they just didn’t have them.

I finally got into Canberra sometime after 3 pm and after grocery shopping went for a walk to move my legs after sitting on my big fat arse all day

It’s Monday and you know what that means right?

Curry salmon and rice

Curried salmon with peas, corn and fried onions on brown rice.

For dessert I had the best beesting ever.
