Dessert

Room service at Oaks on Collins

The mains were good, the dessert was horrible

I recently had the opportunity to stay at the Oaks on Collins in Melbourne. I spent three nights in a room checking in on a Tuesday and checking out on a Friday. The check in experience was fast and efficient. When I got into my room I was struck by the kitchenette and the en suite. Both were made for giants. The amenities rack in the shower stall was set at about 170 cm (higher than my eye line). The kitchenette had a microwave oven, a dish washer drawer, a refrigerator and an induction hot plate. The fume hood controls were higher than I could reach and the upper cupboards were also beyond my reach (I’m 170 cm tall). There were also no plates or bowls and no pots or pans to cook with 🙂 I’m not sure what I was meant to do if I went out and bought my own food to prepare.

So, I was in Melbourne for three nights and one evening had already been arranged with a dinner associated with the meeting I was participating in. That left me options for breakfast and dinner. Over the years I’ve become less and less interested in hotel breakfasts. I’ve already written about my breakfast experiences at Kenny’s Bakery Cafe which was a superb option for me. For the two spare evenings I elected to have room service, mainly because I had a lot of routine work to get through and it is so much easier to just nest in the hotel room and get through it all.

On the first night I asked for a hamburger and an apple and cinnamon crumble.

Tuesday dinner. Room service. Oaks beef burger and chips.

This burger was pretty good. It was filling and tasty. The chips were also very good. The burger wasn’t as enjoyable as my recent Brodburger experience but then the context was also very different.

Tuesday dessert. Room service. Apple and cinnamon crumble.

On first inspection, this crumbled didn’t look that appetising when I first saw it. It looked pretty ordinary.

Tuesday dessert. Room service. Apple and cinnamon crumble. This was horrible.
Tuesday dessert. Room service. Apple and cinnamon crumble. This was horrible.

When I tried to eat this it was just horrible. I tried to swallow a few mouthfuls but it was just disgusting. It is very rare for me not to finish a dessert. I think I’ve done it a few times and that’s about it. I would not recommend the apple and cinnamon crumble.

On the final night I’d already eaten quite a lot and I didn’t want anything really big. I also had quite a bit of work to complete. I just had a steak with king prawns and calamari.

Pay day room service dinner. Rare fillet steak with king prawns and calamari.
Pay day room service dinner. Rare fillet steak with king prawns and calamari.

This was really nice. The steak was cooked rare. If I had a steak knife the experience would have been more enjoyable, but it was tender enough to cut with the butter knife supplied in the kitchenette.

So on balance, the room service meal experience at the Oaks on Collins was okay. The burger and steak were good. I think the less said about the apple and cinnamon crumble the better.

The checking out experience was fast and efficient and each morning I would get a takeaway flat white coffee from the hotel’s restaurant. The coffee was very good.

Podfood in Pialligo Shoutout to @podfood

On Saturday evening Bron and I ate at Podfood in Pialligo

Podfood is well known for breakfast and we’ve enjoyed breakfast there before. This was our first dinner there on a cold cold Canberra night.

I made the booking through Dimmi and as we arrived we were greeted enthusiastically by one of the friendliest waiters ever 🙂

We were shown a table for two along a wall away from the door which on a cold night was appreciated.

The menu on the night is a little different to the one on their website but not too different.

Autumn_2014_Dinner

After a short discussion we went with the Chef’s suggestions five course degustation.

Not only do you get five courses (including dessert) you also receive an amuse bouche and a palate cleanser before dessert.

Salmon tartare with warm kibble rye bread and truffle butter with charcoal salt crystals.

I loved the salmon tartare. It had a lovely refreshing kick to it. The bread was warm and lovely and that truffle butter was whipped smooth with crunch from charcoal salt crystals. I’m so happy they brought out more bread later in the service.

Scallops, smoked corn, morcilla, strawberries, pistachio and apple crumble

This image was a little blown out originally and has required a bit of extra processing. The scallops were perfectly cooked. We loved the morcilla which is Spanish black pudding.

Spatchcock, chicken skin, pumpkin, parmesan, pickled grape, and amaretti crumb

The little spatchcock leg looked so cute when it came out. The pumpkin was smooth and full of flavour. The chicken skin was crispy and made you want more.

Pork loin, star anise boudin, heirloom beetroot, Jerusalem artichoke, apple, onion, and olive

We call this the Dexter special. Notice the blood splatter on the plate from the beetroot. The pork was quite rare and a little chewy but it was tender and had a great flavour. The olive added a fantastic contrast of flavour to balance the sweetness of the apple.

Beef, onion, Balsamic reduction, creamed potato

This beef dish isn’t on the on-line menu and we can’t remember all the details. Of all the dishes this was the one which didn’t seem to have the same balance. Don’t get me wrong. The beef was beautifully cooked. The onion cups holding the balsamic reduction were superb. The whipped potato was amazing. It’s just at the end there was a lemony bitterness that lingered for a little too long.

The lemony bitterness didn’t last long though because…this!

Ginger and orange sorbet to cleanse the palate

This was a delightful palate cleanser. I could have inhaled it as dessert 🙂

The final course was dessert. Again this dish isn’t on the on-line menu. It has orange sorbet plus a carrot bread and soft almost marshmallow nougat like column. In the bottom left hand corner the hint of green is a slice of celery which was cooked by sous vide and had a lovely sweet crunch and only a hint of celery flavour.

The other highlight of the evening in addition to Bron’s lovely company was another diner recognised me and came up and said hello. She mentioned she likes reading my blog. I was very chuffed by that. Thank you 🙂

Now for the rating

I reckon it’s a four colonies out of five. Really good. We’ll aim to return.

Photography details

I shot the food with my Canon PowerShot G16. It was set at aperture priority (f/2.8) and automatic ISO. I learnt that if I don’t use the MACRO function there is a lot less noise in the images. The restaurant was very dark and I wasn’t confident that I’d capture the images at a quality that could be used on the blog. I was pleasantly surprised.

Chairman and Yip

Chairman and Yip helps warm you on a cold cold Canberra night

On Friday evening Bron and I went to Chairman and Yip for dinner. The Chairman group of restaurants in Canberra have a reputation for high quality fine dining with a strong Asian influence. We have eaten here and at the other two restaurants in the group before and always come away very happy with the experience. Chairman and Yip is listed in the Entertainment Book so Bron and I had no hesitation coming back and enjoying a good meal with a discount.

It was a cold cold night, I arrived first with some flowers for Bron and a wine stand was brought out for me for the flowers. When Bron arrived she saw the flowers and was ecstatic.

After perusing the menu we agree on the Chef’s tasting menu which consists of eight dishes including dessert and tea or coffee. In the end we received nine dishes so I was pretty happy. With the discount from the Entertainment book it was a great value high quality meal. Thank you Bron and Chairman and Yip.

Chairman and Yip Calamari tossed with spicy salt and chilli

The calamari had a really nice chilli kick to it. It wasn’t blazing hot but it certainly left some excitement in my mouth. For my niece, this is fancy Japanese chips.

Chairman and Yip Pan seared king prawn salad of basil, mint and sweet corn

This dish had really refreshing flavours. The basil and mint really gave it a great uplift. The prawns were perfectly cooked.

Chairman and Yip Sesame crusted salmon with cinnamon infused soy

OMG the salmon was cooked perfectly. It was like a dense mousse but in a really good way. The white discs were like a pasta or a really smooth cheese. I don’t know what it was but with the salmon and the soy it was amazing.

Chairman and Yip Roasted duck and shitake pancakes

Sorry about the image. There was a little camera shake. I had the ISO at 1600 and the aperture at f/2.8. It was really low light. The pancakes were gorgeous.

Chairman and Yip Grilled field mushrooms with herb and cashew pesto

We’ve enjoyed these stuffed mushrooms before and again they are just wonderful. I could eat a meal of these.

Chairman and Yip Spiced eye fillet skewers with lemongrass and galangal dressing

The beef on this skewer was so tender. It almost melted in my mouth. This is a must have.

Chairman and Yip Crispy lamb Shan-Tung style

This lamb is slowly cooked over night, air dried and then flash fried. OMG this was the best dish of the night. So so good.

Chairman and Yip Beef and scallops ground pepper hot pot

This hot pot was a bonus. It wasn’t on the menu. The scallops were perfectly cooked.

The last two dishes came out together with some steamed rice.

We both chose a dessert and then shared them. These were very nice.

Chairman and Yip never disappoints. If you live in Canberra I reckon this should be a place you eat at once every couple of years. If you’re a visitor, it’s place for fine dining with an Asian influence.

Now it’s time for a colony rating. I’m very happy to give this 4½ colonies. Fantastic. I’ll be back.

The Chairman and Yip on Urbanspoon

Photography information. I shot with my Canon PowerShot G16. I was shooting aperture priority capturing RAW. I was using an aperture of F/2.8 and ISO 1600. The images are quite grainy and rather than display them in full size I’ve elected to display them in medium size. If you click on one of them a slide show will pop up and you’ll see what I mean about graininess.
