Wraps as a theme | Shout out @hilahcooking | #bestblogs13

For the last week I’ve been eating more meals as wraps. My week in Instagram shows it in graphic detail :-)   I’m not sure why I’ve turned to wraps this week. Instagram followers will be familiar with my love of the Mavi Breakfast Wrap over the last 18 months.

On Thursday night I enjoyed an Elite Meats Black Angus and Burgundy sausage wrap

More prize meat from Elite Meats as part of my @2CC prize. Black Angus and Burgundy snags in a salad wrap. #dinner #yummy

The sausage wrap was followed on Friday morning with a Mavi Breakfast wrap

Hey @hilahcooking this is my breakfast wrap full of bacon, egg, mushroom, hash brown, cheese and barbecue sauce goodness #breakfast #breakfastforwoojm #yummy

This is my wrap laid bare for all to see. The Mavi Breakfast wrap contains bacon, egg, mushrooms, hash brown, cheese and barbecue sauce.

In between Hilah Johnson from Hilah Cooking posted a video on a Smoked Sausage Wrap

I decided on Friday I was so going to make a version of Hilah’s sausage wrap because my version from Thursday night was crap in comparison. I split my snag and added onion.

On Sunday night I made a chicken and onion wrap

Tonight's chicken and caramelised onion wrap

I did the onions in the afternoon. I needed three large brown onions, a couple of tablespoons of olive oil, two tablespoons of brown sugar and a two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. I spent about an hour softening the onions with the oil and a good pinch of salt. I then added the sugar and vinegar and stirred regularly for another hour. It turned into a lovely gooey mess of happiness. I also added a little curry powder and smoked paprika for flavour.

On Monday evening Bron came over for dinner and inspired by Hilah I made a sausage and onion wrap.

Bron brought over some caramelised onion she bought at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. I cooked the sausages like Hilah did in her video and made the wrap. The bread I bought even came with little paper pocket bags.

The best part of the evening though was that Bron brought over some of her home made macarons and non-churn ice cream. The flavours were orange and cardamon and lemon curd ice creams. The macarons where chocolate with chocolate popping candy ganache and lemon curd.

This dessert was amazingly good. Bron is a genius in the kitchen and a genius in general (yes her IQ is off the charts)

Toronto to Los Angeles to Sydney to Canberra (YYZ to LAX to SYD to CBR)

I’m grateful that my flight out of Toronto and beyond went relatively well. The journey up to Toronto was a little out there. Toronto is the largest city in Ontario (and Canada) and is the provincial capital. The Toronto Pearson (YYZ) airport is a lot larger than the Ottawa airport (YOW). I spent an hour or so in the Air Canada Maple Leaf lounge and enjoyed a couple of glasses of diet coke. My flight from Toronto to Los Angeles was really good. I sat next to a friendly passenger and the entertainment system in the Air Canada aircraft is very good. They have a USB port for recharging and connecting your smartphone and all the programs are on-demand. During my five hour flight I watched quite a few situation comedies that are not yet screened in Australia. I really enjoyed a compilation from the latest Winnipeg comedy festival.

I got into Los Angeles with a reasonable amount of time to spare (two hours) and managed to get into the United Lounge in terminal seven. It looked like United Airlines was continuing to have problems with its flights from that day. There were large lines of unhappy passengers asking to be put onto other flights, some of them were being sent to other airlines while others were being told to spend a night in LA.

When I got on board flight UA839 I thought we were going to have a trouble free flight except we didn’t move for more than an hour. At first we were waiting for domestic connections, then we were waiting for passengers from the last evening’s cancelled flight to turn up and collect their duty free, and then there was an on-board computer failure and the engineers were called. None of this really mattered given the prevailing tail winds and after an hour or so of delays we ended up being in Sydney about 15 minutes late. For me the flight was great. I was really tired and after watching Star Trek XI (2009) and eating dinner I fell asleep and didn’t wake until about 0300 AEST. The last 90 minutes of the flight was a little bumpy but not really bad.

I’m glad I’m back in Canberra. I’m tired and will sleep well tonight I hope.

I had a little food with my desserts today

I spent today in Brisbane with my daughters. It was busy with physiotherapy appointments, gymnastics training, birthday party sorting, birthday dinner attending and various opportunities to eat.

To be clear Miss10 is becoming Miss11 soon, however, Miss14 attended a birthday party today for a friend and I ended up on the floor in the shopping centre helping build the final present. Miss14′s imagination is amazing. She had this complex gift plan in mind and executed it with the help of many friends, helium filled balloons, packing boxes and a lot of tape.

After getting fairly sweaty and dirty, we said goodbye to Miss14 as she went into the party at a bowling alley and I took Miss 10 and Miss16 to Cold Rock Ice Creamery.

Regular Coconut ice cream and freckles

Coconut ice cream and crushed freckles.

Me eating ice cream.

Cold rock is about my favourite ice cream place. There is one right near where I live. Not much use though given how cold and dry Canberra is .

This evening we went to the local Returned and Services League at Kedron-Wavell Services Club. We went for Miss10 who will soon be Miss11 in a couple of weeks.

This was plate 1. Mainly seafood.

I really like my seafood, especially oysters, prawns and crab.

Bowl 2. Seafood chowder.

This seafood chowder was nothing special. It was a bit thin.

Plate 3. Pork sausage, onion, potato bake, mashed potato, seafood bite and squid.

The pork sausage was tasty and well cooked, although the casing was very tough. I love a good pork sausage.

Plate 5. I did not capture plates 4 and 6.

The stuff was fried nicely :-)

The roast pork was very tender, the crackling though was very salty.

Plate 7. Dessert.

Not enough colours I know. There was fruit but I didn’t get any.

Me eating dessert.

I was annoyed the chocolate mousse glasses weren’t out. I took trifle, pavlova, cream and ice cream.

Birthday cake and my parents' place.

This is a chocolate cake Mum made today.
