The American Dream at Ricardo’s Cafe

For me the American dream is owning a big block V8, preferably an Hemi big block.

For this post though I’m referring to a mousse dessert from Ricardo’s Cafe in the Jamison Plaza in Macquarie.

But more of that later in the post.

Before dessert comes dinner. When it comes to the American dream I also think of one of my favourite Americans, viz., Homer Simpson. One of Homer’s favourite things for dinner is a pork chop. I haven’t made a pork chop for ages. In Darwin I cooked them quite often.

Here are some Homer quotes on pork chops http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Pork_chops and http://www.royalbaconsociety.com/top-10-bacon-quotes-from-homer-simpson/

So this is the pork chop I bought this afternoon. It had a nice strip of fat attached.

This is the seed mustard and maple syrup coating I have ready for my pork chop.

So here is the dish. It tasted pretty good.

Now it’s time for dessert and Ricardo’s cafe’s The American Dream!

I took a few photographs because it looked so good.

I hope you enjoyed the photographs. I really enjoyed eating this dessert which consisted of peanut paste mousse and peanut paste brittle with a raspberry coulis in the syringe. It was amazing. If you live in Canberra and want to try this, Ricardo’s Cafe is an amazing place to enjoy breakfast, lunch or high tea. They also make great coffee and the thick shakes are to die for.

So dear reader, what is your idea of the American dream?

What I ate today and what I got up to today

Today is the birthday of one of my best friends from Medical school. I sent her an e-mail to wish her all the best and then I decided to have another crack at the low fat scrambled eggs I did last week. I shot a series of photographs just for fun.

What did you get up to today?

Ricardo’s Cafe

This morning I had breakfast with Bron at Ricardo’s Cafe in Jamison in the north side of Canberra.

Ricardo’s Cafe is a regular place for us for weekend breakfasts and lunches. If you do a search in Yummy Lummy and the Old Yummy Lummy you’ll find lots of posts featuring Ricardo’s Cafe. This morning Bron tried the new Tiramisu French toast and I had the smoked salmon breakfast (again).

I walked there this morning and enjoyed saying hello to Mr Owl.

Bron enjoyed the French toast noting it wasn’t too dense and not too sweet. You can see the rose water jelly and the chocolate soil. So colourful! Image courtesy of Bron.

I really liked the salmon, it’s a very filling and satisfying meal.

Bron also gave me a vanilla slice she made. I ate it for breakfast dessert. The custard was the best I’ve eaten. It was made from scratch and not from custard powder. If you look closely you can see the vanilla. It was absolutely delicious  I didn’t realise it also had some orange peel in the icing. Bron was very reluctant to let me photograph and share the vanilla slice image because the icing had been affected by condensation from the fridge and Bron thought it was damn ugly.

On the walk home I came by some new Canberra public art

Caramel latte sundae

Regular readers know of my love of all things from Ricardo’s Cafe in Jamison. The cake display has recently changed over and I have been drooling over the caramel latte sundae. You can see a nice photograph of the old line up on their Facebook page.

Ricardo’s cafe has recently been written up in The Canberra Times’ Good Food Guide and there was news that a second restaurant will be opening in Woden near to where I work. I’ve been joking with friends that my Lowes discount card will be smashed soon as I buy new larger trousers and a new belt.

I finished work a little early today and drove to Ricardo’s Cafe and picked up a caramel latte sundae to enjoy as dessert tonight.

Before I get to dessert though I needed to make dinner. For that I made a simple beef and bacon burger with some avocado.

I smashed the avocado first and added lots of chili flakes to add a little spice! To try to reduce the fat levels I didn’t use butter this time and no cream cheese. It still tasted pretty amazing.

So after enjoying the burger I pulled out the caramel latte sundae and tried to eat it slowly and savour it. I used a teaspoon which I always find better for desserts. The popcorn was pretty nice. It was still crunchy and had a great caramel flavour. Inside the dessert was smooth, sweet and had a lovely caramel surprise inside.

Smoked salmon and poached eggs at Ricardo’s Cafe

Yesterday I decided to add a Yummy Lummy blog Instagram account to separate the food from everything else.

I’d love for you to follow me on both accounts.

This morning I had a lovely smoked salmon and poached egg breakfast at Ricardo’s Cafe.

I’ve embedded the images from Instagram

This morning Bron invited me out to Ricardo’s cafe for breakfast. The smoked salmon was very good and even better with egg yolk running over it into the bread.
