Today Bron and I tried something new and a couple of favourites.
The Wagyu cheeseburger was really very good. The bun is quite light with a sweetness to it. That said, as much as the Wagyu cheeseburger is a winner, the pulled pork burger is a bigger winner. That thing is awesome. After the burgers we had dessert. I chose a salted caramel mousse which is really rich but really good 🙂
Of course to enjoy this number of calories we needed to do some exercise. We did a walk around the top of Mount Black just below Telstra Tower.
We went to Ricardo’s Cafe for lunch hoping for a Reuben sandwich
Bron, Max and I recently went to Ricardo’s cafe for lunch and noticed they had a Reuben sandwich on their specials menu. We went back today hoping for two things, viz., a Reuben and a pulled pork sandwich. Unfortunately the Reuben was off today’s specials menu. We ordered croque madame and the pulled pork burger and Max ate the hot potato chips that came with the burger.
I am happy to say Ricardo’s cafe makes the best caramel thick shakes anywhere.
The pulled pork had a Vietnamese sauce/dressing which had a really nice spicy kick to it. We’d happily eat this again (and possibly again and again).
The melted Gruyére cheese, smoked ham, dijon mustard sour cream just added amazing flavours to this late breakfast dish. The salad was also very yummy.
I couldn’t finish this. I shared some with Max. So rich and so good.
Bron enjoyed the golden gaytime cake.
Max loved his salted caramel mousse.
Bron and I marvel at how good Ricardo’s Cafe is as a local casual dining establishment. Hidden away in a suburban shopping centre. It’s popularity is growing but I hope it doesn’t change.
If you want to know where it is, just search for Jamison Plaza in Macquarie. If you’re afraid to leave the south side (you know who you are) that’s fine, more for us north siders 🙂
After lunch I walked home. Correction, I waddled home. There was nothing low carbohydrate or low calorie about our lunch. As I walked I noticed along the lane between Belconnen Way and Catchpole Street about seven shopping trolleys from Woolworths, Coles and I assume Aldi. It made me think of Tara and her quest to control abandoned shopping trolleys in Belconnen.
No walk would be complete without saying hello to Mr Owl and his alter ego, viz., #pubicart
Rather than not share some images I thought I’d also mention that last night we had dinner at the Canberra Southern Cross Club Jamison
I had the smoky sirloin steak
Max had the crumbed calamari

As I continue my quinoa journey I was inspired by #MKR last night and made quinoa corn fritters for dinner tonight.
Last night on My Kitchen Rules, a couple of contestants made corn fritters. I thought I could do something similar with quinoa and made quinoa corn fritters.
These ones had my own special touch to them and I reckon tomorrow I’ll be thinking #ringoffire 😀
Quinoa corn fritters and caramel popcorn cronut
Recipe Type: Dinner
Cuisine: Australian
Author: Gary Lum
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 1
Ingredients
Corn kernels
Quinoa
Flour
Curry powder
Freshly ground black pepper
1 egg
Chilli flakes
Coriander
Mint
Sliced red chilli
Lemon zest
Lemon juice
Instructions
In a small saucepan cook ⅓ cup of cleaned quinoa in ⅔ cup water. Boil for 10 minutes until all the water is absorbed. Remove from the heat with the lid on and rest for 5 minutes.
In a large bowl add some corn kernels, the quinoa, a couple of dessert spoons of plain flour, a teaspoon or two of curry powder, a good few grinds of pepper, 1 beaten egg, shredded mint, shredded coriander, a dessert spoon of chilli flakes, a sliced red chilli, the zest of a lemon, and the juice of a lemon.
Mix thoroughly and allow to rest for a few minutes.
In a frying pan add a thin layer of grape seed oil and a big nob of butter. If you’re a hippy you can use some coconut oil but I have no idea if that’s any better than grape seed oil and butter or beef dripping or lard.
When the oil and butter is hot add dollops of the quinoa corn fritter mix
Fry each side for about 2 minutes
Drain on some absorbent paper
Plate up with some olives and a stuffed pepper
Shoot a photograph
Eat the meal
Then eat the cronut
Wash the dishes
Write the recipe

and after the hot and spicy quinoa corn fritters, it’s time for a caramel popcorn cronut from Ricardo’s Cafe in Jamison.
I met Bron and Max at Ricardo’s Cafe today for some morning tea. I incorporated a walk around Belconnen at the same time.
The Nutella sandwich has salted caramel ganache in between to macaron shells. In the middle is a Nutella mousse. It was delicious. I also had a flat white which was a really nice coffee today.
We’ve eaten out a lot in 2014 and I thought I’d end 2014 with a list of my top 10 Canberra restaurants. Well maybe not the top 10 Canberra restaurant but 10 restaurants I really liked.
I’m not necessarily focussing on fine dining either. I like to think a local suburban cafe can mix it with my top 10 Canberra restaurants. So in no particular order Yummy Lummy’s top 10 Canberra restaurants are:
1. Ricardo’s Cafe in Jamison
Ricardo’s Cafe is situated in the Jamison Plaza in Macquarie. You wouldn’t know it’s there unless you looked for it. It’s open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch and combines main meals with amazing desserts, especially cakes and treats based on mousse. They also do cronuts. If you haven’t visited Ricardo’s cafe and you live in Canberra I’d highly recommend breakfast and lunch. I know some south side people who claim the north side of town is somehow beneath them. I say get over yourselves and try this north side gem. Think smoked salmon, think Wagyu cheeseburger, think Pulled pork sandwich, think caramel thick shake, think a Nutella sandwich!!!
For some of the posts in which I’ve mentioned Ricardo’s cafe check out this link.
2. Les Bistronomes in Braddon
Les Bistronomes is relatively new in Canberra and has become very popular. It’s French but friendly. The menu is easy to understand because there’s an English translation and it has amazing words like Beef Wellington and Snails in it. I’ve only been there once but I’d like to return.
The Cupping Room does coffee a little differently to most places but that isn’t a bad thing. The food is also excellent (or grouse as residents of Melbourne used to say when I was a kid growing up in Brisbane). I was very impressed with the ham hock fritters. I need to go back there for breakfast soon.
The Artisan is solid. I’ve been there twice. The first time was better than the second. The service has been friendly and helpful each time. The food is always well presented and it tastes great. The pork croquette was delightful and the chef’s medium rare Angus steak very good.
Regular readers will know that Morks is a real favourite. The contemporary Thai cuisine that Mork and his family create and serve is pretty amazing. The move to Kingston from Florey has been good for business, every time we’ve been there it’s been full. Being on the Kingston foreshore also means a really nice setting and a clientele from a very well to do part of Canberra. When you go I highly recommend the pork crackling and chilli jam. On the subject of pork, you should try the pork belly.
