Baked salmon with fennel salad

I’ve been away for the last week. I was in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. I was there for a work meeting. No baked salmon there for me. Instead I had a wide variety of meals which were mostly low in fibre and high in salt, sugar and fat. My bowel health took a real blow.

I became unwell while I was overseas too. I woke up on the Monday with a sore throat, congested paranasal sinuses and a splitting headache. Within a day I had a hacking cough and then a fever. Being ill in another time zone seems to make everything worse. The illness and the travel associated tiredness. I started longing for small simple meals. That said I did try some poutine which is like a national dish for Canadians. I’m thinking of making a variation for this Sunday night for what will be the greatest NRL grand final ever when the mighty Brisbane Broncos play the North Queensland Cowboys for rugby league’s greatest prize (next to the State of Origin). It’s been a great year in rugby league (the greatest game of all) with the Mighty XXXX Queensland Maroons winning the state of origin series. Three of my favourite teams in the NRL made the top four teams after the regular season. With my top two teams in the grand final what could be better? While I’m hoping for a Broncos victory which will be a dream for a returning Mr Bennett, I won’t be disappointed if JT and his boys win the game.

Salmon and fennel salad

It’s good to be home and back into my routine. Hopefully my bowels will return to normal soon too.

Ricardo’s Cafe for lunch

We went to Ricardo’s Cafe for lunch hoping for a Reuben sandwich

Bron, Max and I recently went to Ricardo’s cafe for lunch and noticed they had a Reuben sandwich on their specials menu. We went back today hoping for two things, viz., a Reuben and a pulled pork sandwich. Unfortunately the Reuben was off today’s specials menu. We ordered croque madame and the pulled pork burger and Max ate the hot potato chips that came with the burger.

I am happy to say Ricardo’s cafe makes the best caramel thick shakes anywhere.

The pulled pork had a Vietnamese sauce/dressing which had a really nice spicy kick to it. We’d happily eat this again (and possibly again and again).

The melted Gruyére cheese, smoked ham, dijon mustard sour cream just added amazing flavours to this late breakfast dish. The salad was also very yummy.

I couldn’t finish this. I shared some with Max. So rich and so good.

Salted caramel mousse

Max loved his salted caramel mousse.

Bron and I marvel at how good Ricardo’s Cafe is as a local casual dining establishment. Hidden away in a suburban shopping centre. It’s popularity is growing but I hope it doesn’t change.

If you want to know where it is, just search for Jamison Plaza in Macquarie. If you’re afraid to leave the south side (you know who you are) that’s fine, more for us north siders 🙂

After lunch I walked home. Correction, I waddled home. There was nothing low carbohydrate or low calorie about our lunch. As I walked I noticed along the lane between Belconnen Way and Catchpole Street about seven shopping trolleys from Woolworths, Coles and I assume Aldi. It made me think of Tara and her quest to control abandoned shopping trolleys in Belconnen

No walk would be complete without saying hello to Mr Owl and his alter ego, viz., #pubicart

Rather than not share some images I thought I’d also mention that last night we had dinner at the Canberra Southern Cross Club Jamison

Belconnen Soccer Club McKellar

Belconnen Soccer Club has never featured on Master Chef

Bron and I watch food TV like a lot of Australians. We’re currently enjoying Heston Blumenthal week on the Australian version of Master Chef. As you’d expect there are numerous mentions of Chef Blumenthal’s prime restaurant, The Fat Duck (which is coming to Australia soon). Having heard and read stories about The Fat Duck, we figure when it comes to Australia it’ll be out of our price range. On Friday Bron invited me to dinner with her, and her son Max, to the Belconnen Soccer Club for a ‘consolation’ dinner 🙂

This isn’t the first time I’ve dined at the Belconnen Soccer Club with Bron and Max. The first time I had a steak and prawns (surf and turf) which wasn’t too bad but I eyed off someone else’s seafood basket and thought that would be what I’d have the next time.

Bron wanted an Asian dish and chose honey chicken while Max chose his favourite, viz., calamari rings and chips.

Max said the chips were better than the Canberra Southern Cross Club Jamison but the Calamari rings at the CSCC were better.

Bron said her meal was fine and on a par with a Chinese takeaway meal.

The seafood basket had prawn twisters, prawn cutlets, calamari rings, crumbed fish and some chips. It was okay. Not the worst I’ve had but no where near the best.

For dessert Max and I had fried ice cream. Max chose strawberry topping and I chose caramel.

I didn’t finish mine. It wasn’t very good. The batter was too thick and hadn’t cooked long enough. I wouldn’t eat fried ice cream here again. Max didn’t finish his either.

2 vanilla slices 1 pie 1 steak and 1 tiramisu

Today I started five days recreation leave from work. I drove from Canberra to Wangaratta and stopped at the Dog on the tucker box (near Gundagai), Holbrook, and Wodonga.

I’m on my way to Geelong to spend a couple of days watching Miss13 compete in the WAG National Club Championships at the Geelong Arena.

I’ve never driven through southern NSW and Victoria before so in preparation I spoke with many friends who have lived in Victoria. A recurring theme is the food in Victoria is better than anywhere else and the bakeries can’t be beaten.

Here is my path from Canberra to Wangaratta

The next stop was Holbrook because I heard the bakery was amazing and the vanilla slice there was the best in NSW. That is a big claim given my love for the vanilla slices from the Gumnut bakeries in Mittagong and Bowral.

Before I got to the bakery I stopped at HMAS Otway. Holbrook is the adopted home for the submarine.

Then I got into the bakery and asked for a vanilla slice.

It was good but it wasn’t great. It certainly wasn’t as good as the vanilla slice from the Gumnut patisseries.

The drive was made more interesting by podcasts. I love the fact with my iPhone I can listen to podcasts rather than having to rely on the radio or a CD. Today I listened to a couple of Star Trek podcasts from Trek.fm, a Jared Polin “I shoot RAW” podcast as well as a Trevor Long “Your tech life podcast.

The next stop was Wodonga just over the NSW/Victoria border. The Murray River at the cross over is fairly narrow. I was expecting a more substantial river.

I stopped at Henri’s Wodonga Bakery and enjoyed a nice pepper steak hot pie with sauce.

I also had another vanilla slice. This is the first time in decades I’ve tried a vanilla slice with pink icing just like when I was a kid buying them at school. This one was very good, although the icing was a little too thick and very very sweet. The custard was nicer than the Holbrook bakery vanilla slice.

The next stop was Wangaratta and the motel I’d booked.

I love how motels in Australia always seem to place this strip of paper or a variation of it over the toilet seat.

The room is pretty good and it has free wi-fi. I’ll write a review in TripAdvisor soon.

For dinner I went for a walk to find a restaurant. I found Cafe Martini and decided to ask for a steak.

On the way to Cafe Martini though I shot some photographs of some public art and the King River

I asked for the rib eye fillet on the bone cooked rare with vegetables. The steak was rare and well rested. It was very good. I’d eat here again.
