Queensland Day

Happy Queensland Day!

From Wikipedia:

Moves towards statehood began with a public meeting in 1851 to consider Queensland’s separation from the Colony of New South Wales. As the push for separation gained momentum, Queen Victoria was approached to consider establishing a separate colony based at Moreton Bay. The Queen gave her approval and signed the Letters Patent on 6 June 1859. On the same day, an Order-in-Council granted Queensland its own Constitution. Queensland became a self-governing colony with its own Governor, a nominated Legislative Council and an elected Legislative Assembly.

While Queensland Day is not a gazetted holiday in Queensland, many states and territories are observing the King’s birthday on Monday this weekend. Notably, Queensland and Western Australia do not have a gazetted public holiday on Monday. It’s been flat-out at work, with multiple incidents happening at once. I’m grateful not to be on call this weekend. That said, there have been messages to handle today.

How I observed Queensland Day

To celebrate Queensland Day, I went for a drive. I’ve recently got new tyres and new brake pads, so I wanted to go for a drive in the hills. I like windy roads and going up and down steep hills. It was wet and foggy, so visibility was poor. There were also cyclists on the road, who posed a mobile obstacle on quite narrow roads with a reasonable amount of oncoming traffic. It all made for a really enjoyable drive. On the way there, I listened to 1980s Australian hits, and on the way back, I listened to my favourite band, Celtic Worship.

My destination was a bakery that workmates had said had good coffee and excellent sausage rolls. I enjoyed a mug of coffee and a delicious cinnamon scroll. On the way out, I bought a pork-and-fennel sausage roll and brought it home. I had it for lunch. It was a very, very good sausage roll.

For dinner tonight, I had a pork knuckle with some sauerkraut and peas. The pork knuckle had been slowly cooked and then refrigerated. I finished it in an air fryer tonight.

A wonderful way to mark Queensland Day—combining history, a scenic drive through misty hills, good music, and even better food. From cinnamon scrolls and coffee to a perfectly cooked pork knuckle, it sounds like a day well spent and deeply enjoyed in simple, satisfying pleasures.

Most of us love a good drive in the mountains, Tambourine, glasshouse or out the back of Brisbane they are all winding , welcome roads. Happy Queensland Day! The bakery goods look stunning as does your pork knuckle with sauerkraut/peas, just exceptional. I will have to listen to Celtic Worship, right after Bloc Party and Pink Floyd tonight, it is an intriguing name for a band. Enjoy your long weekend Gary.

A very happy Queensland Day and Long Weekend. Have never had sauerkraut (which I have loved since babyhood in Europe) together with peas but if you love it, glad you enjoy . . . the pork knuckle would be appreciated without comment . . . Have had quite a few mugs of black coffee myself today without added bakery items . . . they contain something called sugar and white flour which I avoid :) ! Glad you enjoyed your drive . . . perchance being a racing car driver should have been your alter ego . . . am smiling and going off to watch the Matildas . . . nought I really care for on tonight so might as well be nationalistic :) !

The sauerkraut and peas didn’t seem to clash to my taste

Ah, remember I was born up Baltics/Scandinavia way – childhood rules and tastes > pork, smashed potatoes and sauerkraut with a glass of vodka and a beer chaser . . . I know, I know :) ! Driving – I remember you talking about driving at what I thought a rather frightening speed twixt Darwin and the Alice . .. :) !

After the Matilda’s unfortunate loss tonight I took a few minutes to find out about ‘Celtic Worship’ of whom I had never heard . . . read a little of the background and played a few of their offerings . . . interesting to know what brings peace to you . ..

I enjoy listening to all the instruments being played and when they occasionally sing in Gaelic
Mostly I enjoy their rendering of the hymns I enjoy the most, e.g., https://youtu.be/MOiKZKV3vxI?si=y2YV4GTtpxAZmeSF

I’ll look/listen for certain later – thanks. Somehow I have turned a typically Estonian path – sidelined from our sombre Lutheranism to natural beliefs and Buddhism at the same time trying to understand what brings peace to others.

Gary – thank you for a lovely gentle version of ‘Amazing Grace’. Just wondering whether you have ever listened to the wonder of Russian Orthodox church music as I think you just might like – it is basically a la cappella very resonant solemn choral chords – very peaceful and meaningful even if you do not understand the language. As I said – I am not ‘churchy’ in the classic way. but often listen to hear utter peace – YouTube has beautiful samples . . .
