Pie Floater Cheat

Perryman's Bakery cheese kransky sausage roll

Work remains very busy, so much so that I had to turn down a dinner invitation with someone to have a pie floater. Interestingly, this morning I looked through Facebook memories and saw that exactly one year ago, I went out and had a pie floater.

That inspired me to visit a bakery and buy a pie, specifically a chunky pepper steak pie. To make it easier, I also bought a tin of pea and ham soup and some tomato sauce, since I already had frozen peas at home.

Preparing the soup was simple: microwave radiation for two minutes, stir, then more microwave radiation for another minute to reach the right temperature. To assemble, invert the pie so that it’s bottom up, add some peas, then a little sauce.

The pie floater was delicious.

At the bakery, I also bought a Cheese Kransky sausage roll and a vanilla slice.

The vanilla slice was okay, perhaps a six out of ten.

The sausage roll was also decent, but I think next time I’ll go for a traditional sausage roll—the pork and fennel one I had last week was fantastic.

A cheese kransky sausage roll, how amazing! Your pie floater is delightful, it is much nicer recreating food at home although it is lovely to catch up with friends. Hopefully work will quieten down soon and you can have some more free time Gary.

Thanks, Merryn. I think for the next election the cheese kransky sausage roll may become my democracy sausage!

Everything looks delicious. I had a pepperoni and cheese roll last night for dinner. It almost looks similar to your roll.

I introduced the pie floater to some American friends last year. They seemed to really like it (and the concept of meat pies as opposed to a sweet pie). I wish I could’ve added a vanilla slice to the mix too.

That’s fantastic that your friends enjoyed their pie floater. If they return, they can try a vanilla slice then, I reckon.

At first I thought that a pie floater was the name of a pie and now I presume it is a way of using a pie in another dish. 😊

Thanks, Karen. If you want a little bit more information about a pie floater I wrote about it last year. https://yummylummy.com/2025/06/12/adelaide-pie-floater/

Oh, Gary – I do remember when you were out with a friend and ate that Port Pirie-born South Australian dish with AI playing some part in your photo :) ! Well, if you absolutely need a pie, your dish looks does look better than the previous offering . . . but I am valiantly trying not to look at the following two photos Dr Lum . . . has such fare appeared in the Mediterranean or DASH diets since I last looked . . . :) ? . . .
