Fantastic bacon from @pialligoestate and @CanberraEsntl

The breakfast of champions needs fantastic bacon and eggs

A few weeks ago Liz from http://www.bizzylizzysgoodthings.com/ sent a message around to a few Canberra bloggers asking if they’d like to try some bacon from Pialligo Farm. I don’t think it’s a secret that I like love bacon so I said yes. Liz sent me a voucher for 225 g of bacon and I went to pick it up from the Essential Ingredient in Kingston. The voucher has a value of $7. I also bought a second packet of bacon.

I was listening to 1206 2CC and Mark Parton interviewed one of the artisans from Pialligo Farm when they won the best artisan bacon for Australia. I didn’t realise that supermarket bacon is pumped with water to plump it up and Australian supermarket commercial bacon isn’t as good as European cured bacon. I should say that I am happy to eat supermarket bacon. I buy about 250 g of streaky bacon from Coles every week. I’ve also eaten bacon in the USA, Canada and the UK. I love the Canadian bacon with maple syrup. I’ve also had beef bacon in Malaysia. I also had turkey ham there too. I’m not a fan of beef bacon or turkey ham.

So this morning I made bacon and eggs. I mean what better way to enjoy some good bacon. Oh my, this is good bacon. I’ll be enjoying it all.

Crab bacon sandwich

Last week I had my first crab bacon sandwich from Ted’s Bakery in Haleiwa.

I arrived back in Canberra today after the last day in Hawaii. I wanted dinner to reflect something really special from Hawaii and something I could do easily.

Sandwiches should be easy to make and this is a pretty simple meal that anyone can put together for themselves.

Fresh crab would have been better

I love this Pialligo Farm artisan bacon. Simply the best. I’ve used this amazing bacon before

A soft bread roll. I bought this from Coles.

Lightly fried with some cream cheese. I love cream cheese.

Yum. The bacon on the cream cheese. I cooked the bacon in the oven at 200 °C for 15 minutes.

I mixed the crab with some mayonnaise. I drained the crab for a while.

I forgot the onion but I had iceberg lettuce and tomato.

This crab bacon sandwich was just as good as the one I had at Ted’s Bakery last week. It was the duck’s guts.

Have you ever had a crab bacon sandwich?

How to make a bacon and egg pie

It looks pretty rough but this bacon and egg pie tasted good.

Before I went on my driving holiday (aka vanilla slice crawl) I shared a number of posts based on some sheets of puff pastry I bought. Check out the links below 🙂

I had one sheet left which I thought I may as well use.

Spence Butchery bacon

I finally got to get some Spence Butchery bacon

A month or so ago I blogged about some bacon from Pialligo Estate. Soon after a friend on Twitter, viz., @JohnMalnar suggested I try the Spence Butchery bacon. He reckons it’s the best. I said I would try it and yesterday I managed to get to Spence after my grocery shopping at Westfield Belconnen.  Rather than eating some straight away I went and shot some pelicans around Lake Ginninderra 🙂

Andy's Spence Butchery

The bacon looks and feels very good. The cut is substantial and the butcher is happy to cut it in a variety of thicknesses. I got what I thought was a relatively thin cut but even so the bacon is very weighty and dense. It smells really good raw. I asked for 200 g which worked out to two large rashers and cost me just under $5.

This morning I did a very basic bacon and eggs. rather than fry the bacon though I cooked it in my bench top oven.

The bacon was very nice. Certainly on a par with that of the Pialligo Estate bacon. I may well return to get more Spence Butchery bacon from time to time. I can also get Pialligo Estate bacon now from Westfield Belconnen.

After that breakfast I needed to go on a decent walk so I walked around Lake Ginninderra and shot some photographs

Pelicans on Lake Ginninderra

Canberra put on a perfect day for a walk around Lake Ginninderra

Pelicans on Lake Ginninderra

I went for a walk this afternoon around Lake Ginninderra and shot a few images. The sky was blue with few clouds in the sky. There were lots of birds on the water and lots of people around the lake. These two were close to Yera beach. Not that I really regard anything on a lake as a beach. In my opinion, no surf, no beach. I am amazed when I see people swimming in these artificially made lakes. There are often cyanobacterial blooms and in Lake Burly Griffin the Escherichia coli counts can become dangerous to human health. Not surprising when you consider one source of water is the Queanbeyan water treatment plant. During heavy rain the water levels rise and break through without adequate treatment.

There are lots of pelicans on Lake Ginninderra and black swans too. I didn’t get a good shot of any swans. In 2009 I attended a meeting in New Mexico and there were people there who told me they’d never seen a black swan. They used a term ‘black swan event’ which means the likelihood of something happening is exceedingly rare.
